Darlington Betting – Gordon Finally Gets It Done At Darlington

Posted by Lee-Roy Buckles on 5/4/2010 1:40:07 PM

Online betting players have been watching Jeff Gordon come up short a number of times during his 39-race winless streak, coming in second eight times in that period.  But no one knows Darlington Raceway as well has Gordon does, and he’ll finally get a break in the Showtime Southern 500 on Saturday night.

  • What: NASCAR Betting
  • When: Saturday, May 8th, 7:30 PM ET
  • Where: Darlington Raceway, Darlington, SC
  • Defending Champion: Mark Martin

The Storyline

Darlington’s odd shape at the opposite ends of the track make it arguably the toughest one to drive in all of NASCAR (hence the nickname, “The Track Too Tough To Tame”).  As we prepare for the summer months, the action on the track should heat up as we’re looking to be in for a wide-open run to the Chase.

Darlington Betting – The Favorites

Jimmie Johnson (+600) and Jeff Gordon (+600) are the co-favorites here, and Johnson’s 6.9 average in 11 Darlington races, including a sweep of the 2004 races, the best among active drivers.  But Gordon has won here seven times in 29 races, most recently in 2007, and he finished three spots behind Johnson in fifth here last year.

The way Gordon is driving right now, you’d probably have to take him.  The No.24 driver has three top-three finishes in his last five starts, and he’s definitely ticked about finishing second to Kyle Busch at Richmond last week.

Darlington Betting – The Second Tier

The next group is led by JGR teammates Kyle Busch (+700) and Denny Hamlin (+900), along with Mark Martin (+1200), the defending champion who led 46 laps to hold off Johnson.  Hamlin has an average of 8.0 in four races, including three top-10s, while Busch has an average of 20.4, but he also won here in 2008, and he’s coming off a dominant win at Richmond.  Martin struggled to a 25th-place run last week, but he has a lot of experience at Darlington with 26 top-10s and an average of 12.0 in 43 dances with the “Lady In Black”.

If you’re looking for a value pick in your sportsbook, Hamlin would probably be the best pick as he’s upset about a poor performance at Richmond, his hometown track.  Hamlin finished 11th, which would be good for normal people, but it was his first time there in which he failed to lead a lap, and he was never in consideration to winning.

Darlington Betting – The Longshots

Your best bets for darkhorses are Greg Biffle (+2000), Juan Montoya (+2500) and Joey Logano (+2000), and Biffle is the only driver in this trip with a win here.  Actually, he went back-to-back in 2005 and 2006, and he led a race-high 117 laps in last year’s race before settling for eighth, one spot ahead of Logano in his Darlington debut.

However, Montoya may be the best play here as he has three top-six finishes in his last four races, and he knows he needs to make a run now to position himself for the Chase in a couple of months.

Darlington Betting Prediction & Outlook

Through a mixture of bad luck and an inability to set the car up for green-white-checkered finishes, Jeff Gordon has been snakebitten, but he’s shown this season that he has the will to get the job done.  He has better cars than last year, and it’s only a matter of time before he snaps his winless streak.  Why not at a place where he has 17 top-5s and has won almost a quarter of the time he’s come here?  Go with the sports betting co-favorite, Jeff Gordon, this week.

Pick: Jeff Gordon +600
