Richmond Picks – Busch goes back-to-back at Richmond.

Posted by Lee-Roy Buckles on 4/27/2010 2:15:35 PM

Online betting players will stand a better chance of picking a winner at Richmond than they did at the “Lottery 500” aka Talladega, and this week’s winner at the Crown Royal 400 should remember his way to Victory Lane at Richmond: he won here last year.

  • What: NASCAR Betting
  • When: Saturday, May 1st, 7:30 PM ET
  • Where: Richmond International Raceway, Richmond, VA
  • Defending Champion: Kyle Busch

The Storyline

Joe Gibbs Racing dominated this track last year as Kyle Busch won this event, and then Denny Hamlin finally won at his hometown track in the fall.  After the wildness of Talladega last week, if you think that the ¾-mile track at Richmond will be tame, you’re sadly mistaken.  Richmond is a short track that races like a track much larger in size, and tempers are sure to flare.

Richmond Picks – The Favorite

Hamlin (+600) and Busch (+800) are both behind Jimmie Johnson (+500), who won three of four races at Richmond prior to last year. Busch (6.0 in 10 races) and Hamlin (8.5 in eight races) have the best averages among active drivers, and while Johnson has three wins here, he failed to crack the top 10 in either race.  Don’t forget about Jeff Gordon (+900) and Mark Martin (+900), either.  Gordon has 22 top-10s in 34 races here, including two wins, and he led 193 laps in both 2009 races en route to a pair of top-10s. Martin finished in the top five of both races last year, and he has three top-six finishes in a row after a fifth-place run at Talladega.

Richmond Picks – The Second Tier

Kevin Harvick (+1200) finally got a win last week at Talladega, and he’s returning to a place where he is decent: the No.29 driver has 11 top-10s in 18 Richmond races, including a win in the 2006 summer race.  Tony Stewart (+1200) has three Richmond wins, but two have come in the spring race, and he has nine top-10s in 11 spring races at Richmond.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. (+1500) also has three checkered flags here, and even though he didn’t crack the top 20 in either race last year, sportsbook players shouldn’t be afraid of him.  The No.88 team is working much better this year, as shown by Junior’s consistency.

Richmond Picks – The Longshots

Matt Kenseth (+2000) and Ryan Newman (+3500) are two drivers to consider if you’re looking for better value.  Kenseth is coming off a couple of subpar runs at Texas and Talladega, but he has five top-10s in 10 Richmond spring races, and he’s due after a 25th-place run in the summer race last year.  Newman may be a better pick as he has seven top-10s in eight spring races here, he finished in the top-10 of both 2009 races, and  he’ll be eager to get back on a regular track after another wreck-filled day for him at Talladega, but at least his car stayed on all four wheels this time.

Richmond Prediction & Outlook

The No.18 car is coming off three straight top-10s, and there may not be anyone better at Richmond than Kyle Busch, who should take the checkered flag here once again. Busch has finished in the top five of all five spring races he’s run here, and it seems like forever that he’s been to Victory Lane (he won the Bristol fall race last year). Take Kyle Busch in your sports betting picks.

Pick: Kyle Busch
