Bet Rays Marlins – Tampa Bay Comes Out On Top In Sunshine State Showdown

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 6/4/2012 8:17:44 PM

Sports betting players will see a slew of interleague matchups in their sportsbook this weekend, and one of the highlights comes from Miami, where the Marlins welcome Tampa Bay to town for the first time since their franchise was rebranded. The Rays have split their last 10 trips to South Beach, and they’ll show that they’re still the dominant team in Florida by taking two of three from the Marlins.

What: MLB Betting
When: Friday, June 8th-Sunday, June 10th
Where: Marlins Park, Miami, FL
Pick: Tampa Bay Rays

Jeremy Hellickson (4-2, 2.69) vs. Ricky Nolasco (6-3, 4.35) – Friday, 7:10 PM ET

Hellickson has definitely cooled off since winning his first five decisions of the season, but he hasn’t been alone as his defense has cost him a couple of runs as of late and the Tampa Bay defense has taken a step back as a whole. This will be Hellickson’s first start against the Marlins, and he is 1-0 in four away starts with an ERA of 4.68 ERA.
On the other side, Nolasco has allowed four earned runs or more in four of his last five starts, and has picked up a 2-2 record in five starts at Marlins Park while posting a 5.79 ERA there. We all know that Nolasco has great stuff when he can harnass it, and there are some nights where he looks like a world-beater, but there are other nights where he looks like he couldn’t crack a rotation. Which Nolasco will show up?

Against the Rays, Nolasco is 2-3 in five starts with an 8.51 ERA, and it could take the Marlins a trip or two around the order to get a handle on Hellickson, so the Rays should be your pick on Friday night in the Sunshine State.

MLB Betting Pick: Tampa Bay Rays

Matt Moore (2-5, 4.45) vs. Carlos Zambrano (4-3, 2.81) – Saturday, 7:15 PM ET

This will also be the first time that the Marlins have seen Moore, who was knocked around hard at the beginning of the season, but seems to be settling into being a full-time major-league starter. He has now allowed three runs or less in each of his last five starts, although Moore has yet to earn a victory on the road with an 0-2 record in three starts, along with a 4.67 ERA.

The fiery Zambrano has been on his best behavior, for now, but you never know when you are going to get the worst of Zambrano, who is well known for outbursts and the occasional fight with a teammate. Zambrano has made one start against the Rays, losing in Tampa Bay back in 2008, and he comes into this Saturday showdown with a 1-2 record in five home games and a 4.50 ERA in Miami as opposed to a 1.65 ERA on the road. Perhaps Zambrano is putting too much pressure on himself in front of his new fans?

Moore has been coming around and looking like the pitcher that the Rays gave an extension to in the offseason, and Zambrano…well, you just never know what is going to happen with him. He has taken his lumps at home and that could continue on Saturday, so lean towards the road team once again.

MLB Betting Pick – Tampa Bay Rays

James Shields (6-3, 3.95) vs. Anibal Sanchez (3-3, 2.57) – Sunday, 1:10 PM ET

Shields has now given up four runs or more in three of his last four starts, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that two of those games have ended in losses for the Rays’ All-Star. He is 5-2 in 10 games (nine starts) against the Marlins in his career, and Shields is 4-1 in five starts on the road in 2012, posting an ERA of 3.38.

The Marlins counter with Sanchez, who is 1-0 in two starts against the Rays with an ERA of 4.50 and he is 1-2 in five starts at home with a 3.34 ERA. Sanchez snapped a three-start losing skid by allowing a single run, not earned, over seven innings of work against Washington at home, and you could argue that he has been Miami’s most consistent pitcher over the early part of the season.

With these two on the hill, you could see the lowest-scoring affair of the weekend between the Rays and Marlins, and they both have very comparable splits, but if the Marlins are facing a sweep, put your money on them because home teams never want to get swept on their own field in front of their fans, especially against a state rival. Miami is the play on Sunday afternoon in your online betting picks.

MLB Betting Pick: Miami Marlins
