The online betting world might be focused on the conference finals in both professional basketball and professional hockey, but the Subway Series will command attention in baseball.

American League Weekend Betting Picks: Weekend Series

Game Number One:

New York Mets @ New York Yankees – Friday, May 20 – 7:05 PM ET
The community of sports betting gurus should take notice when the New York metropolitan area’s two Major League Baseball teams lock horns this weekend, as interleague play returns for the 2011 regular season. The Mets are sagging as a franchise, but in one weekend, they’re going to throw the kitchen sink at the superior Yankees and let it ride, hoping to steal a series and gain momentum heading into the middle of a 162-game slate. R.A. Dickey with a 5.08 earned-run average, will start the series opener for the Mets, while the Yankees will counter with veteran righty Freddy Garcia, who has been a steady and workmanlike presence on the mound for the Bronx Bombers, delivering an extremely commendable 3.22 earned-run average in the American League. Just imagine what Garcia can and will do to a National League batting order. Pick the Yankees in this particular tilt, which opens the Subway Series at Yankee Stadium. Garcia knows how to break down hitters, while Dickey has sputtered for much of this year. Garcia is the more experienced pitcher; he’s also the better and more effective one.

Game Number Two:

New York Mets @ New York Yankees – Saturday, May 21 – 7:10 PM ET
A good baseball bettor knows that over 162 games, even the best of teams lose games while mediocre clubs win. In microcosm, betting students know that in a three-game series, a bad team will often win one game against a good team. Therefore, the question must be asked: Is this the game over the weekend that the Mets are likely to steal from the Yankees? In a word, no.

Chris Capuano carries a 4.78 earned-run average into this contest for the Mets, while A.J. Burnett, the right-handed starter for the Yankees, enters Saturday’s game with 3.99 earned-run average. Burnett can run hot and cold, but the thing to realize about Burnett is that he’s a veteran arm. The Mets’ tepid lineup doesn’t pose a supremely formidable challenge, so unless Burnett is at his very worst, he should be able to keep his National League opponent under wraps. That should be enough for the Pinstripes’ bats, which should be able to work counts and eventually draw some hittable pitches from the manifestly inconsistent Capuano, who has yet to find a real groove this season. Pick the Yankees because Burnett is a much better choice in this pitching confrontation.

Game Number Three:

New York Mets @ New York Yankees – Sunday, May 22 – 1:05 PM ET

If there’s a team that MLB baseball betting experts can bank on to win series, it’s the New York Yankees. However, if the Pinstripes win the first two games of this three-game set, would they be likely to win on Sunday as well? Maybe not.

Mike Pelfrey will take the bump with a 5.11 earned-run average for the Mets in the afternoon finale to this three-game weekend series. Meanwhile the Yankees will go with Ivan Nova, who currently owns a 4.33 earned-run average. It’s true that the American League stalwart has yet another pitching matchup in which its starter is at least three-fourths of a run better than the Mets’ starter, but Nova isn’t as experienced as Freddy Garcia or A.J. Burnett. Pick the Mets because of the laws of averages and because Nova isn’t yet a supremely steady hand.
