Betting Predictions For Braves Nationals – Washington Keeps Atlanta In Second Place

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 5/29/2012 3:03:54 PM

The Atlanta Braves got whacked by the Washington Nationals this past weekend in Atlanta. The Braves will need to counter this weekend when they head to the nation's capital city.

Atlanta Braves @ Washington Nationals – Series Overview

Game 1: Friday, June 1

If you are interested in betting on baseball this season, the upcoming three-game weekend series between Atlanta and Washington should offer a compelling collision between two winning ballclubs. Mike Minor is Atlanta's starter in the first game of this weekend set. He has a 6.98 earned-run average and has been flatly clobbered by the opposition over the past three weeks of the season. Washington will go with Stephen Strasburg, who has registered a 2.64 ERA and has stayed one step ahead of hitters on a regular basis. The fact that Minor has been so awful in recent weeks is what should give the Nationals a pronounced advantage on Friday night. Minor is unlikely to last beyond the fifth inning. Strasburg should go at least six innings if not seven.

MLB Betting Pick: Washington

Game 2: Saturday, June 2

The when you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this second game of the three-game series, you have to pay attention to the man who will take center stage, Brandon Beachy, the Braves' ace of the future. Beachy has been superb this season, throwing heat and showing next-level location with his pitches. Beachy has crafted a miniscule 1.77 earned-run average with his live, young arm, which has been stopping opposing hitters with noticeable consistency. The Nationals' starter in this game, Gio Gonzalez, has been in the same league as Beachy, however.  Gonzalez carries a 2.08 ERA into this contest, meaning that a five-star pitching duel is in the cards for this tilt. If one had to lay odds on this game, they'd be fairly even. Atlanta is the choice on Saturday in game two of this series for one prevailing reason:

The Braves are going to enter this series with a little more urgency, precisely because the Nationals owned last weekend's series between the two teams in Atlanta. The Braves don't have the advantages in all of the pitching matchups in this series, so they're not going to sweep, and they might not even win the series. However, this seems like the spot in which Beachy can stand tall and give Atlanta at least one win in the District of Columbia.

MLB Betting Pick: Atlanta

Game 3: Sunday, June 3

In the finale of this series, the Braves will send right-handed starter Tommy Hanson to the bump. Hanson has posted a 3.12 earned-run average to this point in the season, being an entirely solid pitcher but not a shutdown force. On the other hand, Jordan Zimmermann has been even better on the youthful and electrifying starting staff of the upstart Nationals. Zimmermann has posted a 2.47 ERA and being a thoroughly reliable core member of the Nats' rotation. Zimmermann's emergence has been one of the main reasons the Nationals have been able to rise to the top of the National League East Division through the month of May in 2012. It only stands to reason that in what could very well be the rubber game of this three-game series, Zimmermann's pitching will enable Washington to take a lead into the eighth inning and shut the door on Atlanta.
