Betting Predictions For Rays Yankees - Rays And Yankees Clash In The Bronx

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 5/31/2012 3:38:25 PM

The Tampa Bay Rays have enjoyed a relatively steady and stable season, while the New York Yankees have lagged behind them. The teams now meet at Yankee Stadium for three games.

Tampa Bay Rays @ New York Yankees – Series Overview
Sports betting line: N/A

Game 1: Tuesday, June 5

When you attempt to bet on sports, especially in Major League Baseball games, you will sometimes need to look at the big picture and piece together the various parts of a much larger puzzle. The visiting Rays, as they come to Yankee Stadium for this three-game set, will probably go with James Shields in this game (starters have not yet been officially announced at press time, and it's very possible that managers Joe Maddon and Jo Girardi will tinker with their rotations in this series). Shields has not been spectacular, but he's certainly been solid.

A 3.63 earned-run average in the American League is quite respectable, and in this matchup against the Yankees, he should be able to keep his team in the game at the very least. Andy Pettitte is the probable starter for the Yankees. He has a 2.53 ERA, but he hasn't been pitching through the entirety of the season. His comeback has represented a feel-good story to be sure, but he's not as durable or formidable as he used to be. The Rays should be able to find good pitches to hit against Pettitte, and they should be able to wait him out, taking close pitches and working counts to their advantage. Tampa Bay will get Pettitte out of the game before the seventh inning, and with New York missing its closer, Mariano Rivera, a battle of the bullpens will go to the Rays in the final frames.

MLB Betting Pick: Tampa Bay

Game 2: Wednesday, June 6

When looking at this game, sportsbook odds need to be examined with great care and discernment. You might think the competitive calculus leans in favor of probable Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb, who has a 2.25 ERA in his first two starts of the season. New York's probable starter, Ivan Nova, is saddled with a very disappointing 5.46 earned-run average, so on a basic elemental level, he doesn't stack up favorably with Cobb in any identifiable way. However, Nova is a more experienced pitcher, while Cobb has come from an off-the-radar place in a short period of time. Will Cobb keep the Yankees guessing? It could happen, but it's not likely to. The veteran New York hitters should be able to flex their muscles against Cobb, relieving pressure on Nova and creating a very high-scoring contest. Take the Yankees in game two on Wednesday.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Yankees

Game 3: Thursday, June 7

Tampa Bay is leaning toward going with David Price, who brings a 2.71 ERA to the Thursday's series finale. New York will want to match Price with its own workhorse, C.C. Sabathia, a credentialed veteran pitcher with a 3.66 earned-run average. Price and Sabathia have locked horns on many prior occasions. They are both upper-tier pitchers in the American League, and they figure to create another dramatic evening of baseball at Yankee Stadium. This series means more to the Yankees than the Rays (albeit by a small margin), and frankly, that's the best reason to make New York the slight favorite in this game. Take the Pinstripes over the Rays.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Yankees
