Betting Tips For Orioles Mets – Orioles Face Uphill Battle In Interleague Set With Mets

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 6/14/2012 4:55:05 PM

The Baltimore Orioles have been very good so far in 2012. Unfortunately for both the team and its fans, the Orioles are learning in a hurry that being good simply isn’t good enough in a division as talented and deep as the American League East. The Orioles fell one game back of the New York Yankees for top spot in the division before the sports betting weekend even after winning seven of their previous 10 games, and will have consistently play at a high level just to keep pace with the top teams in the AL East the rest of the way, continuing with a three-game interleague series against New York’s other baseball team, the Mets.

The Orioles will run in to a tough matchup right out of the gate in this series, sending Jake Arrieta to the mound opposite R.A. Dickey for the Mets. The 37-year old Dickey, who has a career 4.17 ERA, improved to 10-1 with a 2.20 ERA this season after going the distance in a 9-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in his last start, allowing just one run with 12 strikeouts. Dickey set the Mets’ franchise record by going 32 2/3 innings without giving up a run, and became the first 10-game winner in the majors this season. Baltimore’s offense has had no trouble scoring runs, but they rank just 19th in the majors with a .249 team average, and could struggle to find their power against the knuckleballer. Arrieta is coming off one of his best starts of the season after allowing just one run in seven innings while striking out nine in a 7-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates,, but that marked the first time in four starts that he lasted longer than 4.2 innings.

Unfortunately for Baltimore, Dickey isn’t the only Mets’ starter with an ERA under 3.00 on the season, with Johan Santana hovering just under that mark so far in 2012. Despite a consistently strong effort this season, Santana is just 3-3 on the year, but one of his biggest problems has been a lack of run support. The Orioles well send Tommy Hunter to the mound opposite Santana, and if he stays true to his 5.40 ERA, the Mets’ runs should come. New York has quietly slipped in to contention in the National League East right behind the Washington Nationals, and an excellent MLB betting record at home is a big reason for it.

The Orioles won’t get much reprieve in the pitching department with Brian Matusz getting the call for the sportsbook series finale, but Dillon Gee hasn’t been that much better for New York, so perhaps this is a good opportunity for them to spoil the sweep. Baltimore has been an excellent power-hitting club all season, and after Gee gave up five home runs in his last six starts, they could take advantage and avoid dropping a third-straight.
