AL East-leading Yankees Look To Add To Blue Jays’ Misery

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 5/16/2013 6:42:13 PM

The New York Yankees were expected to be an afterthought in an American League East division dominated by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2013. After all, the Blue Jays landed the biggest score in a busy offseason in which the Yankees largely stood pat, and that was enough for the online sports betting experts to label Toronto the World Series favorite. That hasn’t been the case at all as New York has compiled the best record in the AL East through 39 games, with the struggling Blue Jays 9.5 games back at the bottom of the division heading in to a three-game set between these teams this weekend.

The Yankees haven’t exactly been blowing opponents out early on, but they have done enough to win games and a top-five pitching staff is a big reason for it. The New York pitching staff ranks fourth in the majors in ERA, and the fact that they rank sixth in quality starts has a lot to do with it. Hiroki Kuroda is one of the starters that haad found a way to keep the pinstripes in almost every game, with a 2.32 ERA on the year. Kuroda is 5-2 on the season, and should have the upper hand against the struggling Mark Buehrle, whose 6.19 ERA is another reminder of all that has gone wrong in Toronto this season.

By comparison, the Blue Jays’ pitching staff ranks 29th in the majors in team ERA, and are just 23rd in quality starts. Buehrle, RA Dickey, and Josh Johnson have all had their fair share of struggles this season, and an offense that still ranks just 15th in scoring hasn’t done nearly enough to make up for it. Brandon Morrow is slated to start on Saturday but has missed consecutive starts because of hamstring tightness and back spasms, and he could sit again in favor of Ramon Ortiz. David Phelps has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three of his last four starts, and if he could do that against the Blue Jays he could improve to 2-2 on the online betting season, especially with no Morrow for Toronto.

The sports betting series will wrap up with both aces going up against one another, and while CC Sabathia has been the better of the two so far, the reigning National League Cy Young award winner has been pretty good of late for the Blue Jays in RA Dickey. Dickey has not allowed more than three earned runs in three of his last four starts, and he is coming off one of his best outings of the year after holding the San Francisco Giants to just two earned runs in six innings of work for his third win of the season. Sabathia is 4-3 with a 3.19 ERA, but hasn’t won in three straight starts and will be pitching opposite of Dickey who will be back in New York and had a solid start there earlier in the year. Toronto has fallen on desperate times, so look for them to grind out an important win and avoid the series sweep.
