Braves Match Up With Defending World Series Champion Giants

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 5/7/2013 7:21:57 PM

The defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants are off to an excellent start to the 2013 season. The Atlanta Braves are one of the teams that feel they have a legitimate shot if they match up against them in the National League postseason. Both teams still have a long way to go before a potential playoff showdown, and there is still no guarantee that both online betting teams will make it that far. However, this weekend will give us a good idea as to where they stand when matching up against one another, with a four-game series that gives us a look at four of the five starters on both sides.

The best pitching staff in the majors is a big reason for Atlanta being where it is right now, but it isn’t as though the entire group has been invincible. Julio Teheran’s 5.08 ERA is well above the team’s third-ranked 3.28 ERA, but he is 1-0 through five starts and the Braves have won every game he has started. That is testament to the offense behind him, which has scored six runs or more in four of Teheran’s five starts. Ryan Vogelsong has given up four runs or more in five of his six starts this season, so the Atlanta offense should be able to bail Teheran out again if they need to.

San Francisco has done a solid job on the offensive side of the ball this season, but the problems that the pitching staff have had are somewhat alarming. Matt Cain is another starter that has struggled with a 5.57 ERA, although he has been better in his last two starts. The Giants had lost the first five games that Cain started before putting together consecutive wins, but they can’t like the match up with Tim Hudson going for the Braves, as he is 4-1 with a 3.83 ERA this online sportsbook season.

Those two pitching match ups make the Braves the smart play on the road, but it won’t be nearly as easy with Madison Bumgarner on the mound for Saturday’s matinee. Bumgarner is 3-1 with a 2.31 ERA and a WHIP under 0.95, and while Paul Maholm has been solid for Atlanta all year, the Giants need to bounce back and avoiding dropping a third-straight to open this sports betting series at home.

The four-game set wraps up with perhaps the most unpredictable match up, as Kris Medlen starts for Atlanta opposite Tim Lincecum. Medlen’s 3.38 ERA is solid, but he is 1-4 on the year and has allowed 11 runs over his last three starts. Lincecum’s numbers aren’t as good as Medlen’s, and he has developed a reputation for being very inconsistent. San Francisco will fight hard to avoid dropping three of four at home to a team they could end up playing in the playoffs, but Medlen has deserved better this season and Lincecum is far too inconsistent to count on in this spot.
