Braves Pirates Betting Predictions – Braves Look To Set Tone For Postseason

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 9/27/2012 6:46:21 PM

The Atlanta Braves aren’t at risk of another late season collapse that could deny the franchise its playoff aspirations this time around, but now it is about preparing for the postseason and building some momentum before they return to the big dance. The Braves will wrap up their season with three games on the road at the Pittsburgh Pirates this week, and the sports betting goal will be to set the tone for a World Series run.

The Pirates’ fans may be able to somewhat understand how Atlanta felt a year ago after a promising season dissolved in to an early end to their season, although Pittsburgh’s collapse began much earlier in 2012 than the Braves’ did the year before. The problem for the Pirates was a 34-46 road record that prevented them from holding their own in August and September, although Pittsburgh is already destined to finish above .500 at home with a 42-33 online sportsbook record heading in to this past weekend’s series against the Cincinnati Reds. Atlanta will look to chip in to that win percentage with former Pirates’ pitcher Paul Maholm set to start for the Braves in the series opener. Maholm has gone 4-3 with a 3.71 Era since joining Atlanta from the Chicago Cubs earlier in the year, and will look to celebrate his return to PNC Park with a win over 24-year old and fellow starter Jeff Locke, whose 6.35 ERA is well above the team average.

Pittsburgh should feel more confident with Kevin Correia on the mound for the second game in this series, and at this point it could help if the Braves decide to rest some veterans with the postseason only days away. Correia has been inconsistent in splitting his last four starts with just one run allowed in two wins combined, and six earned runs combined allowed in two losses. Tommy Hanson is scheduled to get the start for the Braves, and while he will be looking to get back on track following a tough loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in his last start, Atlanta isn’t likely to push him too hard at this time.

After splitting the first two games of the betting series, the pressure will be on the Pirates to deliver in their final goodbye to the PNC faithful with a matinee game to end the season. There shouldn’t be any doubt that Pittsburgh will hand the ball off to veteran AJ Burnett for this game, and he should award his club by giving them one more big performance with the chance to earn win No. 17 of the season. The Braves aren’t nearly as likely to go with Tim Hudson with the chance to rest him for game one of the postseason, and with nothing on the line there shouldn’t be much reason for Atlanta to push it too hard in this contest.
