Sports betting players could be getting a preview of the World Series when interleague play kicks off in Boston on Friday as the Red Sox hosts Milwaukee. Both teams are leading or are near the top of their division heading into this series, and while the Red Sox have been red-hot lately, their pitching is going to take some knocks against a hard-hitting Milwaukee lineup.

  • What: MLB Betting
  • When: Friday, June 17th-Sunday, June 19th
  • Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
  • Pick: Milwaukee Brewers

Friday, 7:10 PM ET – Shaun Marcum (7-2, 2.68) vs. John Lackey (4-5, 7.41)

The Brewers have an edge in this contest as Marcum has faced the Red Sox 11 times from his career in Toronto, and he has gone 5-5 with a 4.38 ERA. Marcum is also 3-2 in eight games at Fenway Park with a 3.52 ERA, and he won’t be intimidated by going into Boston. Lackey has been all over the place this season, but he has two straight wins, so that’s something to build on. He is 2-2 in four starts at home, but Lackey also has an 8.27 ERA at Fenway, and that may not be encouraging against the high-powered Brewers. Lackey has also been aided by great run support as the Red Sox have scored 22 runs in those two wins.

Because Marcum is familiar with the Boston lineup and the nuances of Fenway Park, he can impart some wisdom on his teammates, and that is going to lead to a win for the Brewers in the series opener.

Betting Edge: Milwaukee Brewers

Saturday, 1:10 PM ET – Randy Wolf (4-4, 3.20) vs. Jon Lester (9-2, 3.73)

The Red Sox will be the MLB betting favorites at home in this contest of pitchers who are coming off fantastic outings: Wolf tossed seven shutout innings in Chicago, allowing six hits, but the Brewers fell 1-0 to the Cubs in a rare lack of offense. Lester scattered a run on two hits over eight innings in a 14-1 rout in Toronto for his fifth win in six starts. He’ll be making his first start against the Brewers, while Wolf has a 2-1 mark in five starts against the Red Sox with an ERA of 2.73, and he is 1-1 in three starts at Fenway with a 2.79 ERA. However, he hasn’t faced Boston or been to Fenway since 2004, and both sides have obviously changed since then.

Lester hasn’t been as good at home as he has been on the road so far this season, and he has given up 12 runs in his last two starts at Fenway, while Wolf has given up one earned run or less in four of his last five starts. But the edge goes to the Red Sox because of Lester’s day record: 3-0 in five day starts with a 1.95 ERA.

Betting Edge: Boston Red Sox

Sunday, 1:35 PM ET – Yovani Gallardo (8-3, 3.76) vs. Tim Wakefield (3-2, 4.39)

While Marcum and Zack Greinke have taken most of the attention when it comes to the Milwaukee rotation, Gallardo, who is in his fifth season with the Brewers, is quietly putting together a very solid season, and he’s 3-2 in seven starts on the road with a 3.74 ERA in his first trip to Fenway. Gallardo has been the same pitcher at home as he is away, and that is a calming influence on a team. Wakefield walked five batters in a loss in Tampa Bay, and he is 1-1 in eight games (four starts) at home with a 5.16 ERA. The veteran knuckleballer has been pressed into extra duty because of the season-ending injury to Daisuke Matsuzaka, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Brewers can pick up on his go-to pitch early. The 44-year-old is 5-2 in 11 starts against the Brewers with a 3.33 ERA, and the last time he met Milwaukee was in 2008.

Like most games, you’ll know early on whether or not Wakefield has his knuckler going, and Milwaukee should be able to tee off on it with their powerful lineup, which will lead to a victory for the Brewers in your online betting book.
