Cardinals Braves Betting Tips - Cardinals And Braves Tangle In Matchup Of N.L. Contenders

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 5/24/2012 3:07:43 PM

The St. Louis Cardinals lead the National League Central Division. The Atlanta Braves are near the top of the National League East. The two teams will lock horns in a big three-game series.

St. Louis Cardinals @ Atlanta Braves – Series Overview
Sports betting line: N/A

Game 1: Monday, May 28

When you make an online betting play at any one of several of the online betting sites in the country, you will have to sift through data and arrive at a not-that-easy conclusion if you want to make a play on this particular game. The raw numbers will tell you to go with St. Louis: Cardinal starter Lance Lynn has a 2.31 ERA and has been extremely good – surprising, even – as a starting pitcher after being a relief option last season.

Atlanta is going to send Tommy Hanson to the mound with his 3.31 earned-run average. That's a one-run advantage for St. Louis, but when you realize that Lynn has been surprising, you have to then contemplate the reality that he could be due for a fall. There's a strong body of logic to support either pick, but St. Louis has been sliding downward in recent weeks while Atlanta has maintained its position a little better. The Braves will probably win this series, and that means they'll probably strike first in game one on Monday afternoon in Georgia.

MLB Betting Pick: Atlanta

Game 2: Tuesday, May 29

When looking at this game, the sportsbook calculations are likely to lean in favor of the Cardinals. Veteran starter Jake Westbrook will start the game for St. Louis, boasting an impressive 2.41 ERA. Atlanta will match up with starter Randall Delgado, who carries a not-so-special 4.26 earned-run average to Turner Field. Westbrook is a smarter, more experienced, and generally more effective pitcher than Delgado. It's only one game, but the matchup is clearly tilted to St. Louis. This is the Cardinals' best chance for (at least) one win in Atlanta.

MLB Betting Pick: St. Louis

Game 3: Wednesday, May 30

The Redbirds will go with Kyle Lohse, who entered his previous start on Friday, May 25 with a 2.91 ERA (that game was played after this article went to press). Lohse will be opposed by Atlanta starter Tim Hudson, who entered May 25 with a 3.03 earned-run average. The key thing to notice here is that Hudson, due to injury, did not start his season until April 29. Hudson has clearly made a strong and substantial recovery from his ailments. He's throwing the ball well, with the change of speeds and good location the Braves know he can deliver. Hudson is a very savvy moundsman, a veteran presence who knows his way around hitters and the strike zone. Lohse is a solid pitcher, but Hudson figures to be a little bit better this time around. Hudson's arm is also comparatively fresher than Lohse's because he hasn't pitched as often this season. Expect Lohse to run out of steam in the middle innings while Hudson pitches into the seventh and gives Atlanta the win in the finale of this series.

MLB Betting Pick: Atlanta
