Cleveland Indians Betting Predictions – Indians Look To Turn Things Around Under Francona

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 2/10/2013 6:20:55 PM

The Cleveland Indians feel they have found their man with the hiring of general manager Terry Francona. It would be an understatement to say he has a lot of work to do. Francona will get started with a club that finished 26 games below .500 in 2012, hoping that he can help make the difference as the franchise looks to turn things around. The hiring of an experienced manager that has won it all before has some Indians’ fans excited to see what the new year will bring, but for most they understand that there is still a long way to go before this sports betting team is ready to compete for a division title in the American League Central.

That certainly appears to be the case after the team supposedly quit on former manager Manny Acta last season, which led to his ultimate dismissal and the search that brought Francona in. However, Acta wasn’t exactly in a position to succeed with the talent he had at his disposal. The Indians made a small splash this offseason with the additions of Mark Reynolds and Brett Myers, and traded for Trevor Bauer in a deal that could wind up being a steal if it sets up their rotation the way that they hope it will. The big splash came with the free agent signing of Nick Swisher to a four-year, $56-million deal, and while he may not be worth that money based solely on production, there is a lot that he will bring to Francona’s clubhouse.

A consummate professional, Swisher has always played with a competitive edge that manager’s love, and that will be no different in Cleveland. It will be interesting to see how he performs in a much different situation than he faced in New York, and he will be relied on as much off the field as on it. The losses of Shin Soo Choo and Grady Sizemore will hurt the offense, but they did bring in Reynolds and Drew Stubbs to help a lineup that will be set around Carlos Santana, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Jason Kipnis in front of Swisher. Last year’s lack of consistency was maddening at times for online betting fans, so perhaps this year’s group can be better.

The starting rotation should also be better with the addition of Bauer, who could be among the sleeper players that provide an immediate boost this season. Justin Masterson isn’t the same pitcher that he was in 2011 when he had career online sportsbook numbers, but if he can show even marginal improvement he will be a decent option at the top of the rotation with room for Bauer to work in behind him. Ubaldo Jimenez and Myers each have potential if they can be more consistent, and it will be on Francona to make sure his staff gets the most out of their starting arms.

Overall, the Indians appear to have improved on paper, even if it takes some time for Francona to get the results that he wants from his team. It will take a little more time and perhaps a couple of key additions before Cleveland is ready to compete with the big boys in the AL Central, but at least with Francona and some solid young talent, this year’s Indians’ team will start to turn things around.
