Colorado Rockies Betting – Rockies Success Based On Young Talent Rising

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 4/10/2012 10:47:13 AM

When the Colorado Rockies opened the 2011 MLB season with a 17-8 record in the month of April, there was no shortage of online betting experts that felt they had a team capable of contending for a National League West crown. Injuries and inconsistent play from the pitching staff contributed to the Rockies falling back down to earth as the year progressed, and it led to the Colorado management making a shift in strategy that led to some major changes. Ubaldo Jimenez was shipped off to the Cleveland Indians, and the team also parted ways with Huston Street, Ty Wigginton, Chris Iannetta, and Ian Stewart in exchange for younger players. The result was the stockpiling of several young talents that Rockies’ fans are hoping will make their team competitive this season, with one major free agent addition that could push them over the top.

Colorado hasn’t been a big spender in recent seasons, which is why it was such a surprise when they managed to sign free agent Michael Cuddyer to a three-year, $31.5 million deal to help bring some more offense to the table for the 2012 season. Cuddyer will help add another element to an offense that already has Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki in the heart of its order, and his versatility should be a solid addition. Gonzalez set the franchise record for RBI in 11 straight games last August and has become much more consistent, while Tulowitzki batted .321 throughout the second half of last sports betting season and is poised for another big year.

With the order set, the biggest concern for the Rockies has to be their starting rotation, where they will be banking on a couple of crucial probabilities. The first of those probabilities will be dealing with whether or not Jhoulys Chacin can get his walks down after leading the National League with an average of 4.04 allowed per nine innings last season. The second, and obviously the bigger of the two, is whether or not a 49-year old Jamie Moyer can hold down the No. 2 spot in the rotation behind ace Jeremy Guthrie for an entire season. There is no shortage of MLB blogs supporting what Moyer can do, and fans cheering for him to become the oldest pitcher in baseball history to record a win, but his durability and consistency will be two major concerns. Closer Rafael Betancourt is solid and the bullpen has some depth, but it could be exposed if relied on too often.

While many baseball betting fans will look to Cuddyer and the offense as they key to the Rockies’ success, the truth is that the most important aspect of this team will be its starting rotation, and whether or not some young talent can step up and support the veterans like Moyer. Colorado fans will understand that this is a long season where consistency is the key after last season’s collapse, and if the Rockies are ultimately going to contend it will be on their young prospects to come through.
