Fourth Of July Might Not Generate A Lot Of Offensive Fireworks In Some Games

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 7/3/2013 7:51:30 PM

It’s a day when firework shows are found in abundance, as the United States celebrates its birthday. However, will big-league offenses be able to provide explosive content as well?

Game 1: Arizona Diamondbacks @ New York Mets – Thursday, July 4

Sport betting lines will probably tilt toward the Mets in this contest, but they’re not going to make either team an overwhelming favorite. The Diamondbacks certainly rate as a better team than the Mets, making it quite reasonable for a bettor to choose Arizona in this tilt, but right now, the Diamondbacks are in freefall – they have not won a single game on an Atlanta-New York swing. They’re not just losing, but are getting shredded on a regular basis. A team that once owned a substantial lead in the National League West has fallen back to the pack, creating what is essentially a five-team logjam of mediocrity, with everyone near the .500 mark. Should a bettor trust Ian Kennedy, Arizona’s starter in this game? Kennedy has been a drag on the Diamondbacks’ rotation this season, causing bettors to rightly shy away from putting money on his arm. No, New York starter Dillon Gee has not been transcendent in his own right, but Gee is capable of acquiring above-average form at times. No one has a strong sense of what’s going to happen in this game – that’s an honest point which has to be acknowledged. Yet, if one is to lean in a given direction, the Mets feel like the better play at the moment. They feel better about themselves than the D-Backs do.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Mets

Game 2: Cleveland Indians @ Kansas City Royals – Thursday, July 4

When the best online betting sites tackle this clash, they will view it as a game the Royals should be favored to win. One should not expect a lot of offense in this clash. Kansas City has one of the worst hitting teams in baseball, saddled with a lineup that has far too many holes in it. Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez owns a mediocre 4.63 ERA, but against the Royals, he should be able to have a reasonable amount of success.

The reason why Kansas City should win, though, is that its starting pitcher, James Shields, has been terrific in 2013, posting a 2.99 ERA through the month of June. Shields has a very good chance of shutting down the Indians, enabling the Royals to win a game with a score in the area of 4-2 or 3-1.

MLB Betting Pick: Kansas City

Game 3: San Francisco Giants @ Cincinnati Reds – Thursday, July 4

This is not the same thing as poker, given that there’s an odd-shaped ball involved, but Cincinnati does have the better dealer in this game. San Francisco is sending its ace, Matt Cain, to the hill, but Cain has struggled this season, with his ERA nowhere close to where he expects it to be (4.29). Cincinnati starter Mike Leake, on the other hand, has his ERA at 2.52, and when one realizes that San Francisco has been shut out in each of the first two games of this series, why wouldn’t one bet on the Reds yet again?

MLB Betting Pick: Cincinnati
