Friday Begins the Second Half of the MLB 2014 Season

Posted by on 7/17/2014 10:45:51 PM

The All-Star break is over in MLB and it is time to for teams to get back to work. This is also the time of the season when some teams make their big push and other teams fall by the wayside. The first half of the season saw some interesting surprises and now fans are wondering if those little surprises will become big time headlines as the race for the playoffs gets underway.

Friday – Kansas City Royals @ Boston Red Sox

The Kansas City Royals are in second place in the AL Central, while the Boston Red Sox are dead last in the AL East. But both teams have similar gaps between themselves and the first place teams in their divisions. The Royals trail the Tigers by 6 ½ games, while the Red Sox trail the Baltimore Orioles by 9 ½ games. Both teams can make pushes in the second half of the season that could result in playoff positions.

The Royals will be sending pitcher James Shields and his 9-5 record to the mound to face the struggling Clay Buchholz, who is a game below .500 at 4-5. The Red Sox need their pitching to improve if they want to make a playoff run and one pitcher that has a spotlight on him is Buchholz. But with injuries plaguing Buchholz all season long, it does not look good for a Red Sox rebound.

Pick: Kansas City Royals

Friday – San Francisco Giants @ Miami Marlins

The complete dominance of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL would be a great story if it were not for the fact that the San Francisco Giants are matching the Dodgers win for win. Right now, the Giants are two down in the win column to the Dodgers but even in the losses, that puts San Francisco one game out of first place. The Miami Marlins were a great story in the first half of the season, but they kind of faded towards the All-Star break. Miami can still get into the NL East playoff hunt if it can put together a winning streak, but that is going to be awfully tough against a San Francisco team that plays so well on the road.

Pick: San Francisco Giants

Friday – Cincinnati Reds @ New York Yankees

The NL Central is, once again, a huge logjam for the pennant race. The only team out of the NL Central pennant race is the Chicago Cubs. The New York Yankees are trying to give Derek Jeter a better retirement send off than they gave Mariano Rivera by actually making the playoffs this year. The Yankees are a game team, but they are just having too many roster issues to pull off a sustained playoff run. The second half of the season should be interesting for Yankees fans, but it will probably not result in a playoff berth. The Reds, on the other hand, will go right down to the wire again this season just like they did last season and probably pull out at least a wild card spot. In this game, the determination of the Reds will overpower the ailing Yankees.

Pick: Cincinnati Reds
