Rays, Red Sox The Best Bets Among AL East Teams This Saturday

Posted by on 5/29/2015 8:58:57 PM

The New York Yankees were outscored 47-23 over the span of six straight losses and yet still they head in to this weekend in the top spot in the American League East. Only 3.5 games separates the five teams in the wide open division heading in to this weekend and as we head in to the month of June the big question now is, which of these five teams will emerge to win the AL East? Here is a quick look at the best bets on the board for Saturday’s action featuring AL East teams.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Minnesota Twins

Saturday, 2:10 PM ET

The Blue Jays have received some of their finest pitching of the season of late including a strong performance from 22-year-old Aaron Sanchez in his last start but they are still just 5-5 over their last 10 games and now they have to visit a Minnesota team that has really stepped up over the past few weeks. The Twins have emerged as a legitimate contender in the AL Central with Kyle Gibson in particular standing out. Gibson has posted a 1.54 ERA over his last six starts over which he has given up more than a single run only one time so look for him to shut down the Toronto lineup while the Twins score just enough runs to win this matinee date at home.

Pick: Minnesota

Tampa Bay Rays @ Baltimore Orioles

Saturday, 4:05 PM ET

The fact that the Rays are still in contention in the AL East is probably more of an indictment on the state of the division than it is the team but Tampa Bay had found ways to overcome holes in their roster to remain in the hunt under rookie manager Kevin Cash prior to their latest skid. The Rays weaknesses were on full display throughout a string of five straight losses and it won’t get any easier for them with Erasmo Ramirez taking the bump opposite Wei-Yin Chen in Baltimore on Saturday. The Orioles have been very inconsistent early on but home field and a favorable pitching matchup will help them earn the win in this one.

Pick: Baltimore

Boston Red Sox @ Texas Rangers

Saturday, 7:15 PM ET

Mike Napoli has helped spark the Red Sox offense of late and their pitching has been better over the past couple of weeks overall so there is reason for optimism this weekend in Texas. Wade Miley has posted three straight wins while allowing a combined three earned runs over three starts to get back to .500 on the season and if the Boston bats can provide him with some run support against 23-year-old Alex Gonzalez for the Rangers it could be four wins in a row for the veteran pitcher who had struggled out of the gate.

Pick: Boston

New York Yankees @ Oakland Athletics

Saturday, 10:05 PM ET

The Yankees have been marred by inconsistent play of late and despite his 2-4 record it won’t get any easier for them against Jesse Hahn and the Athletics. Hahn will bring a 3.69 ERA to the mound Saturday after a 4-0 win over the Detroit Tigers in which he allowed just four hits in a complete game shutout in which he threw five k’s and he will be looking to keep the Bronx Bombers in check. Nate Eovaldi will counter for new York and while he is 4-1 this season he had allowed three or more earned runs in four of five starts before his last outing against the Kansas City Royals and if the Athletics get to him early on it could be another long night for the Yankees.

Pick: Oakland
