Red Sox, Orioles Among Best Bets For Saturday’s American League Baseball Slate

Posted by on 7/3/2015 10:18:24 PM

The top four teams in the American League East are separated by only a single game and yet there is a good chance that three of the four miss the playoffs entirely since the division has been so relatively mediocre this season. All five teams from the AL East are in action Saturday including a meeting between the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees. Here is a look at the best bets on the board for Saturday’s AL baseball slate with a focus on team’s from the East.

Tampa Bay Rays @ New York Yankees

Saturday, 1:05 PM ET

The Rays ability to constantly reload and compete in the AL East has been extremely impressive but it’s still worth noting how bad the division is this year and the role that has played in their relative success. Nathan Karns has posted a respectable 3.26 ERA but he is still just 4-4 and Tampa Bay has lost each of his last two starts despite the fact that he only allowed two earned runs over 12 innings of work in those games. The Yankees will try to hand Karns a third straight loss but Michael Pineda coming off consecutive losses himself and has given up 10 earned runs in his last 11.1 innings of work. Pineda will be better in this game but Karns is overdue for a win and should be able to get it in this one if Pineda slips even a little again.

Pick: Tampa Bay

Toronto Blue Jays @ Detroit Tigers

Saturday, 1:08 PM ET

The fact that Detroit is third in the American League Central despite the fact that David Price is 7-2 with a 2.62 ERA has to be a major concern as injuries and inconsistent pitching beyond their ace has been a major problem with the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins both stepping up in their division. Price is coming off consecutive winning starts but he will have his hands full with the highest scoring offense in baseball and will need some help against Toronto. Fortunately for Price and the Tigers, RA Dickey is 0-5 with a 5.79 ERA in seven road starts so Detroit should be able to take care of business in this game.

Pick: Detroit

Houston Astros @ Boston Red Sox

Saturday, 1:35 PM ET

The Red Sox are the only AL East team that isn’t within a game of the division lead but they aren’t completely out of it just yet at six games back and perhaps the most promising sign has been how Clay Buchholz has performed in recent weeks. Buchholz has posted a 2.91 ERA since the start of May and while Boston could use him as a trade chip down the line he will start for them versus Houston on Saturday opposite Collin McHugh. McHugh has won three straight starts to improve to 9-3 despite a 4.51 ERA on the year and he could be overdue for a loss headed in to this date with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Boston might not contend for an AL East win but they should win this game.

Pick: Boston

Baltimore Orioles @ Chicago White Sox

Saturday, 2:10 PM ET

Baltimore continues to remain in the hunt thanks to their offense and a shutdown bullpen but their starters have done just enough to win games of late including Chris Tillman, who has registered five straight winning starts. Tillman is now 6-7 despite a 5.67 ERA and he could very well get back to .500 pitching opposite Jeff Samardzija for the White Sox on Saturday. Chicago has lost five of the last six games that Samardzija has started and it’s no surprise that his ERA has climbed from 3.84 to 4.56 over that span so don’t be surprised if the Orioles stay hot and earn another win against the White Sox on Saturday.

Pick: Baltimore
