Yankees, Rays And Dodgers All Try To Make Moves In Early July

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 7/2/2013 8:04:25 PM

Just 10 days ago, the Los Angeles Dodgers were 9.5 games out of first place in the National League West. Now, they’re only 3.5 games out of first. Can they continue to improve?

Game 1: Los Angeles Dodgers @ Colorado Rockies – Wednesday, July 3

NFL betting experts who don't devote a lot of attention to big-league baseball might think that in this matchup, Colorado should have the advantage. However, there’s something to be said for the notion that the team with more momentum could thwart the team with a better record. Colorado entered play on Tuesday, July 2 with a record that was two games better than Los Angeles, but the Dodgers are riding a wave of confidence right now. Los Angeles looked like a lost team a week and a half ago. The Dodgers were 9.5 games out of first place and were drifting along, headed toward oblivion in a season when team owners – including former basketball superstar Magic Johnson – invested more than $200 million of payroll into fielding what was hoped to be a better team. The Dodgers were clearly the biggest disappointment in the sport, bigger than the Los Angeles Angels, the Washington Nationals, and the Philadelphia Phillies. Now that Los Angeles has moved into contention in an admittedly weak National League West, the Dodgers could find a level of belief that Colorado – bereft of a recent winning streak – won’t be able to acquire.

In this contest, Los Angeles will send starting pitcher Zack Greinke to the mound against Colorado starter Tyler Chatwood. It’s true that Chatwood has a 2.13 ERA, but that’s based on nine starts, not a full season’s workload. Greinke is a more proven pitcher in terms of being able to handle the rigors of the long journey from April through September. Go with the Dodgers in what feels like a slight upset.

MLB Betting Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers

Game 2: New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins – Wednesday, July 3

The betting websites that are scrutinizing lineups and pitching staffs do not need to be told that the Yankees own the advantage in this game. It’s true that Minnesota starter P.J. Walters has been brilliant at times this season, but in the long run, his ERA of 6.03 marks him as a subpar starting pitcher. Walters will have a very tough time going up against New York ace C.C. Sabathia. It’s true that Sabathia has been far from his best this season, but when matched against Walters, he owns a substantial advantage. Take the Yankees without sweating the details in this contest.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Yankees

Game 3: Tampa Bay Rays @ Houston Astros – Wednesday, July 3

For a lover of online poker, it might be hard to arrive at a decision on who is the better dealer in this game. However, if you’re not convinced that Tampa Bay starter Roberto Hernandez is better than Houston starter Bud Norris (or vice versa), you can look at the batting orders and defensive tendencies of these two teams. Tampa Bay drummed Houston in the series opener on Monday night, and there’s little reason to suggest that Houston will turn the tables on Wednesday. Choose the Rays over the Astros here.

MLB Betting Pick: Tampa Bay
