Diamondbacks Try To Increase Their National League West Lead Over The Rockies

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 7/7/2013 7:34:16 PM

The Arizona Diamondbacks aren’t even five games over .500, but they’re in first place in the National League West because the rest of the division is under the .500 mark.

Colorado Rockies @ Arizona Diamondbacks – Saturday, July 6

Sports betting line: no line

Why Colorado Will Win

When the betting websites break down this contest, they’re going to give a good, long look at the pitching matchup, but they’re going to look at other factors as well. It’s true that Arizona has the advantage in terms of the clash between the two starting pitchers involved, but if you get past that component of Saturday’s tilt, the Rockies will have the advantage in other areas. First of all, Colorado’s bats have been scoring at a high rate. The Rockies traded punches with the Los Angeles Dodgers this past week, reviving their offense over the past two days after getting shut down earlier in the week by Dodger ace and National League Cy Young Award candidate Clayton Kershaw. Colorado has established a much better hitting rhythm than an Arizona lineup that’s largely been scuffling of late. The Diamondbacks scored two runs in the first 12 innings of their Thursday win over the lowly New York Mets. The D-Backs have not established any appreciable upward momentum, and that has to be accounted for when looking at this tussle in Phoenix.

One also has to point out that Arizona, after playing a 15-inning game on a travel day on Thursday, could still be feeling the aftereffects of a grueling travel schedule. The D-Backs just finished a 10-game road trip, and while they’re going to play most of the month of July at home, the rest factor is not likely to kick in just yet. The Diamondbacks look like a worn-out team at this point, and fatigue could ambush them on Saturday.

Why Arizona Will Win

In a contest of online poker, the importance of a dealer remains intact. In this matchup, Arizona won’t have a spectacular starting pitcher on the bump, but the Diamondbacks are definitely going to put a better pitcher on the mound than the Rockies will. Arizona starter Wade Miley owns a 4.29 ERA in a full season’s worth of starts. Wiley is unremarkable as a pitcher – not great, but not intolerably deficient. He’s a decent, competent pitcher, and that’s about it. Against some opponents, Miley would not be favored to win a game for his team, but against Colorado starter Drew Pomeranz on Saturday, he will be favored to prevail. Miley just has to be solid against Pomeranz; ESPN’s game notes explain why:

“Making his first start of the year, Pomeranz took the loss as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings… With Juan Nicasio out of the rotation, Pomeranz didn't do much to prove himself as a better option as he needed 92 pitches to get through just 4.1 innings and walked four. He'll look to fare better in his next start, which may prove difficult as it's on the road against Arizona. Chances are there are better options for your team than Pomeranz for now.”

Bettors would not be advised to pick Pomeranz and Colorado in this game.

Who Will Win?

The extent to which Drew Pomeranz does not inspire confidence is (and should be) the main reason for making a betting play on this game. Take the Diamondbacks with great confidence.
