Under-The-Radar Pitchers Acquire The Spotlight In Dodgers-Mets Matchup

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/24/2013 7:17:52 PM

In the first few weeks of the big-league season, the Los Angeles Dodgers have had trouble scoring runs. They will try to develop some momentum against the New York Mets.

Los Angeles Dodgers @ New York Mets – Thursday, April 25
Sport betting line: No line

Why Los Angeles Will Win

When the best online betting sites tackle this clash, they will give the Dodgers an advantage based on the pitching matchup itself. It’s true that Los Angeles’ scheduled starter in this contest, Hyun-Jin Ryu, has been solid for manager Don Mattingly, giving the boys in Dodger Blue some solid starts and keeping his team competitive each time he’s taken the mound this season. In contrast to Ryu, New York starting pitcher Jeremy Hefner has been much more inconsistent. He hasn’t eaten up innings the way Ryu has, and he has not showed the durability of his counterpart to this point in the season.

Yes, it’s only April, but evidence is mounting at this point in time. The profiles of pitchers become more defined and substantial as the season works its way into May and June. If Hefner doesn’t make some noticeable improvements in the next three weeks or so, the mediocrity he’s displayed to this point in the season will characterize the balance of his season. Right now, Ryu is clearly the more proven pitcher, the man who should be able to get the better of this mano-a-mano duel in Queens, N.Y.

Why New York Will Win

This is not high-stakes poker, not in April, but there's still a certain amount of urgency in this game. The Dodgers know that they have to keep pace with the white-hot Colorado Rockies in the National League West Division, while the Mets feel the same pressure to stay within striking distance of the league-best Atlanta Braves in the National League East.

The Mets are not exactly tearing up the National League – they got embarrassed in Colorado last week by the Rockies – but they might still have the advantage in this game (and for that matter, the series against Los Angeles) because the Dodgers’ offense has remained in the dumpster for the first three weeks of the season. Los Angeles’ pitching staff has been really, really good, giving up fewer runs than most of the 15 teams in the National League to this point in time. However, the Dodgers are buried near the bottom of the Senior Circuit in terms of run production.

Were it not for the Miami Marlins – a team with a payroll that’s almost at minor-league levels – the Dodgers would have the worst offense in the National League. L.A. is 14th, only one spot above the Marlins. The Dodgers, of course, have invested over $200 million in their roster, making their performance an acute embarrassment. The Dodgers might regroup at some point, but right now, their offense is absolutely wretched, and that’s why the Mets can – maybe even should – win here.

Who Will Win

These are weird times, but the Dodgers’ offensive struggles late last season have simply not evaporated. Los Angeles is still failing to string together hits, and until there’s a sense that the Dodgers can hit consistently, they should not be trusted. Take the Mets in this spot.
