Dodgers Phillies Betting Tips – Los Angeles Piles On Philadelphia On The Road

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 5/30/2012 3:48:55 PM

Most online betting sharps had Philadelphia as the favorites to win the National League pennant, but the Phillies have been hit hard by injuries and the worst may be yet to come as their staff ace is out for a while, potentially the next two months. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers have the reigning Cy Young winner in their rotation as well as one of the biggest surprises of the season, and they also have the frontrunner for the MVP award, who just returned from the disabled list and they’ll see a trip to Philadelphia as a chance to flex their muscles.

What: MLB Betting
When: Monday, June 6th-Wednesday, June 8th
Where: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers

Clayton Kershaw (4-2, 1.97) vs. Cliff Lee (0-2, 2.82) – 7:00 PM ET

These former Cy Young winners (Kershaw in 2011, Lee in 2008 with Cleveland) headline the series and they still have a start to make prior to this on Wednesday, when Lee would still be looking for his first win despite being fifth in the National League in WHIP and there is added pressure on him now with Roy Halladay out for 6-8 weeks. Lee has been lights out against the Dodgers in three starts, winning two with an ERA of 0.40, but at home, the 33-year-old southpaw is 0-2 in four starts with a 3.86 ERA.

Kershaw, who turned 24 in June, has struggled against the Phillies in six starts, posting an 0-4 record and a 5.18 ERA, his highest ERA against any team where he has more than one start. Three of those starts came in Philadelphia, and Kershaw is 0-2 with a 6.89 ERA. Even Superman has kryptonite and it seems that the Phillies are Kershaw’s, which is why you have to lean towards Philadelphia, especially with Lee’s record against the Dodgers.

MLB Betting Edge: Philadelphia

Chad Billingsley (2-3, 3.88) vs. Undecided – 7:05 PM ET

The Phillies are still trying to decide who will fill Halladay’s spot in the rotation; there was talk that they could bring back Roy Oswalt, but the veteran decided to sign on with Texas. Vince Worley is still on the disabled list as well and that isn’t good news for the Phillies, who have been battling injuries from the beginning of the season and it is seriously threatening their chances in the East. They could manage to get away with the injuries to Ryan Howard and Chase Utley because of their pitching, but now that Halladay is gone, they’re between a rock and a hard place.

The Dodgers will likely go with Billingsley, who is a decent 1-2 in six starts with a 3.31 ERA against the Phillies, and four of those outings have come at Citizens Bank Park, where all his decisions have come against Philadelphia. However, the 27-year-old has a 2.42 ERA on the road against the Phillies, so he was probably going to give them a run regardless of whoever was on the mound for the other team. Given that the Phillies don’t know who will take Halladay’s spot yet, the early edge has to go to the Dodgers.

MLB Betting Edge: Los Angeles Dodgers

Chris Capuano (7-1, 2.14) vs. Kyle Kendrick (1-4, 4.10) – 7:05 PM ET

For all of the Dodgers’ success so far in 2012, Capuano may be the biggest of them all; he won 18 games back in 2005, but he has been up and down since then and the Dodgers were simply hoping that he could hold the fort down. Instead, he is an early Cy Young candidate, although it remains to be seen whether he can maintain his pace. The 33-year-old lefty is 0-2 in six games (five starts) against the Phillies despite an ERA of 2.87, and he is 0-2 in three starts in Philadelphia with a 3.71 ERA.

Kendrick will have to take on more responsibility as well with Halladay out and tossed a complete-game shutout in St. Louis to grab his first win of the season, but inconsistency has been the theme of his career. The 27-year-old righty is 4-3 in seven games (six starts) against the Dodgers in his career, but an 8.01 ERA can’t be encouraging to anyone. At home in 2012, Kendrick is 0-3 in four games (two starts) with a 5.28 ERA and that is enough to scare off sports betting players.
