Fantasy Baseball Odds – Hot and Not for July 15

baseball oddsAny fantasy baseball odds follower knows the All-Star break is a time for reflection – a time not just to review who’s hot and not over the past week, but also who’s surprised and disappointed all season long. Of all the guys who’ve shifted sports betting lines this season, whom should you sell high and buy low?

Fantasy baseball odds: Hot and not, July 15

  • Overachievers Reynolds, Zobrist can net you some proven stars in trades
  • Rollins, Hamels should lead the Phillies – and your fantasy teams – back to the playoffs
  • Don’t forget about Francisco Liriano

WHO’S HOT – SELL HIGH

Mark Reynolds, third baseman, Arizona Diamondbacks
(Season stats: .258, 24 HR, 62 RBI, 15 SB)

Baseball’s ultimate free swinger silenced critics in the first half by posting some eye-popping numbers. While Mark Reynolds is a well-rounded offensive threat with 30-plus homer power and decent speed, he’s not A-Rod. Find an owner who thinks Reynolds is bound for a 40/30 season and get a nice return – how about A-Rod straight up?

Ben Zobrist, utility, Tampa Bay Rays
(Season stats: .297, 17 HR, 52 RBI, 11 SB)

Zobrist’s story is touching – his teammates love him and so do those betting at their offshore sportsbook on Tampa – but he’s primed for a fall. He never even hit for much power in the minors, so the 30-plus homer pace is likely an anomaly. You can probably swap him for an ace pitcher right now.

Ryan Franklin, relief pitcher, St. Louis Cardinals
(Season stats: 0.79 ERA, 21 SV, 0.79 WHIP)

So much for St. Louis’ closing woes. Franklin has been outstanding this season, allowing almost no baserunners and relishing the closer mentality. While he’ll still save plenty of games down the stretch, his ERA is due to jump, as his batting average on balls in play is around the Mendoza line (meaning he’s lucky). You could cash him in for a more proven closer with lesser numbers – Jonathan Papelbon?

WHO’S NOT – BUY LOW

Jimmy Rollins, shortstop, Philadelphia Phillies
(Season stats: .229, 7 HR, 34 RBI, 16 SB)

Not exactly what most MLB betting fans had in mind when they drafted the former MVP Rollins in the first round, is it? He’s been positively terrible, but there’s reason for hope. For one, he’s hitting .378 in July. Some owners will only notice his brutal overall numbers and not realize that he’s heating up and that he’s a second-half player historically. I like his fantasy baseball odds to rebound.

Cole Hamels, starting pitcher, Philadelphia Phillies
(Season stats: 5-5, 4.87 ERA, 85 K, 1.38 WHIP)

He’s a good buy low, though you shouldn’t go overboard as he’s still an injury risk. However, his second-half ERA is almost a run lower than his first-half ERA over his career and his best stretch is August and September, when his ERA is under 2.75 both months. Wouldn’t you want an ace like him pitching at that level during your fantasy baseball playoffs?

Francisco Liriano, starting pitcher, Minnesota Twins
(Season stats: 4-9, 5.47 ERA, 93 K, 1.49 WHIP)

While he may never return to his dominant form that rocked the fantasy baseball odds world a few seasons ago, Liriano is coming around after a brutal start to the year. In June and July, he’s cut his walk rate in half and he’s whiffing a batter per inning. He’s likely very cheap or maybe even on your waiver wire in shallow mixed leagues, so he’s absolutely worth a gamble.
