giants padres betting

Sports betting players are gearing up for the second half of the MLB season, and action in the National League West kicks off with a series between the leaders from San Francisco and San Diego. Both teams rank in the bottom five in the majors in scoring runs, but they’re in the top 10 in runs allowed, and it should be no surprise that six of the last 10 meetings between the two have gone under the posted total in San Diego. Look for the Giants to come out on top of another series that favors pitching.

What: MLB Betting
When: Thursday, July 14th-July 17th
Where: PETCO Park, San Diego, CA
Pick: San Francisco Giants

Thursday, 10:05 PM ET – Madison Bumgarner (4-9, 3.87) vs. Aaron Harang (7-2, 3.45)

Bumgarner’s last start before the All-Star break came against the Padres, and he allowed five runs in six innings, but took a no-decision in a 6-5 extra-inning victory. He’s still searching for his first win against San Diego, going 0-2 in six games (five starts) with a 3.86 ERA, and the 21-year-old southpaw is 0-2 in three games (two starts) in San Diego with an ERA of 3.00. Harang made his first start in a month in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, and he tossed six no-hit innings, yet earned a no-decision in a 1-0 loss. His foot looked healthy as he looks for his second win of the season over the Giants, and Harang is 6-6 in 14 starts against San Francisco with an ERA of 3.40, while he is 5-2 in nine starts at home this season with a 3.28 ERA.

There may be some rust as players had a few days off, but it’s not like this was going to be a high-scoring game, not like Bumgarner’s last start against the Padres. Give the slight MLB betting edge to San Diego, as Bumgarner seems to be snakebitten at PETCO Park.

Betting Edge: San Diego Padres

Friday, 10:05 PM ET – Tim Lincecum (7-7, 3.06) vs. Dustin Moseley (2-8, 3.21)

This has all the makings of a game that will go under the posted total in your online sportsbook as Lincecum is ranked 53rd out of 60 pitchers in the National League when it comes to run support, while Moseley is dead last. Lincecum, coming off his fourth All-Star appearance, has a loss to the Padres in 2011, taking his record to 6-4 in 15 starts with a 2.20 ERA, and he is also 4-2 in eight starts in San Diego with a 1.80 ERA. Moseley was on the other end of that 6-5 loss to the Giants in his last start before the break, and it’s strange that on the night he receives run support, Moseley didn’t have a very good outing (although he did strike out a career-high nine hitters). That was his first start against the Giants, and Moseley is 1-4 in eight starts at home with a 3.64 ERA.

It’s going to be a long night at the plate in San Diego on Friday, but the edge goes to the Giants and Lincecum as Moseley just doesn’t get enough run support.

Betting Edge: San Francisco Giants

Saturday, 8:35 PM ET- Barry Zito (3-1, 3.18) vs. Cory Luebke (2-3, 2.57)

Zito has pitched well since returning from the disabled list, but you never know when the bottom is going to fall out for the 33-year-old southpaw, who is 4-8 in 19 games (18 starts) against the Padres with a 4.13 ERA, and he is 1-3 in eight games (seven starts) in San Diego with a 3.64 ERA. Luebke has been fantastic for the Padres since moving from the bullpen, and he may be pitching himself into a permanent starting role for the Padres. He didn’t deserve the loss as the Padres fell 2-1 in San Francisco, but Luebke needs to improve on his 3.42 ERA at home this season.

While Luebke is off to a solid beginning as a starter, you have to remember that he has made just six career starts, three of which have come this year, and it did take him 100 pitches to get through six innings in his last outing against the Giants. A small sports betting edge should go to Zito and San Francisco here.

Betting Edge: San Francisco Giants

Sunday, 4:05 PM ET – Matt Cain (8-5, 3.06) vs. Mat Latos (5-10, 4.04)

Cain is coming off his second All-Star appearance, but facing San Diego may not be his first choice when it comes to making a return after the break. A 5-3 loss at home took Cain’s record to 5-10 in 24 starts against the Padres with a 3.58 ERA, and he is 2-5 in 11 starts at PETCO Park with an ERA of 2.96 ERA. Latos has been all over the place in 2011, and he dropped his last two starts before the break, although the Padres did score just one run in those two games. Latos is a solid 2-2 in six starts against the Giants with an ERA of 2.37, and he is 3-5 at home this season with a 3.61 ERA.

Cain has had some bad luck in San Diego, but he has been more consistent this season than Latos, who is trying to find last year’s form which gave him 14 wins. Cain will also be motivated to avenge that five-run outing against the Padres in San Francisco two starts ago, so take the Giants in your online betting pick.
