How To Bet On 2012 World Series – Tigers And Giants Square Off In The Fall Classic

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 10/23/2012 6:48:01 PM

The Detroit Tigers won 88 games in the regular season, but they got hot in the playoffs. The San Francisco Giants won six of six elimination games the past two weeks. They meet for the title.

Detroit Tigers vs. San Francisco Giants – Series Overview

Game 1: Wednesday, October 24

Sport betting experts will find it very hard to pick San Francisco Giants starter Barry Zito over Detroit staff ace Justin Verlander in Game 1. Zito certainly did impress his teammates, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the larger baseball world by throwing 7 2/3 shutout innings last Friday night in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series. However, he was bailed out by some terrible at-bats from the Cardinals, who served up three straight clunkers in Games 5 through 7 of that series.

Against Detroit, Zito is going to have his hands full. His fastballs, which generally don't even reach 90 miles per hour on the radar gun, are going to be fat, sitting targets for the Tigers' sluggers, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. If Zito cannot prevent the first two hitters in Detroit's batting order – leadoff man Austin Jackson and two-hitter Omar Infante – from reaching base, Zito will be in for a long night. Zito has to pitch to Cabrera with the bases empty so that he can pitch around him and then face the left-handed-hitting Fielder with a runner on first and nothing more. If Detroit's non-power hitters can get on base with any degree of regularity, the Tigers should flourish against Zito.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit

Game 2: Thursday, October 25

This is pure high-stakes poker, and while Detroit starter Doug Fister has been excellent at times in the regular season, he has been bothered by nagging injuries. The Giants have not stacked up favorably with their opponents this postseason in many pitching matchups, but they have managed to dig out wins anyway. The sense here is that San Francisco will frustrate Fister and work counts to its advantage. Detroit will score four or five runs here, but San Francisco will score six or seven.

MLB Betting Pick: San Francisco

Game 3: Saturday, October 27

When the best online betting sites size up this matchup, they would trust likely San Francisco starter Matt Cain more than the Tigers' starting pitcher for this contest, Anibal Sanchez. Though he is seen as a promising young performer, Sanchez will be taking the mound in the Tigers' first home game of the series, a source of worry for Detroit fans. The adrenaline that will flow through Sanchez's veins will likely make him overanxious. He will probably be wild at times, and then he will throw a few pitches right over the middle of the plate when he falls behind 2-0 or 3-1 in the count. This game sets up well for San Francisco not just because Cain is the staff ace for the Giants, but because Sanchez will probably regress after pitching brilliantly in the first two rounds of the playoffs against the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees. In what figures to be a 7-5 or 6-4 type of game, the Giants should be able to knock out Sanchez early and then add a few runs against Detroit's deficient bullpen. Take San Francisco in Game 3.

MLB Betting Pick: San Francisco

Game 4: Sunday, October 28

This pitching matchup will probably pit Ryan Vogelsong of the Giants against Max Scherzer of the Tigers. Vogelsong was great in the National League Championship Series, but he pitched twice at home. Now, he'll have to pitch on the road. Scherzer will make his only start of the World Series in this game. He should be fresh, and his mental approach should be solid. Detroit will bounce back and even the series at 2-2 on Sunday night.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit

Game 5: Monday, October 29

This game will pit Verlander for Detroit against either Zito or Madison Bumgarner (in all likelihood) for the Giants. Don't expect Verlander, pitching at home, to buckle in the face of pressure. This will be the last Detroit home game of the season, and the Tigers will ride a wave of energy to the winner's circle before jumping on a plane back to San Francisco.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit

Game 6: Wednesday, October 31

When the series returns to the Bay Area, the Giants will be in a comfortable position even if they are indeed down 3-2. San Francisco is six for six in elimination games this season. The Giants love playing in the face of adversity, so it's natural to expect them to come through in a moment such as this one.

MLB Betting Pick: San Francisco

Game 7: Thursday, November 1

If this series does go the distance, the pitching matchup will be a likely repeat of Game 3, with Sanchez staring down Cain. One has to admit that Cain will be tough to beat in a Game 7 scenario. Cain won Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the Cincinnati Reds. He won Game 7 of the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Why would you bet against him in Game 7 of the World Series? The Giants are hard to kill, and Detroit will find that out in this series. Expect the Giants to claim baseball's world championship when everything is said and done. This season feels a lot like the 2010 campaign, when the Giants simply couldn't be denied their date with destiny.
