How To Bet On Braves Phillies - Phillies Attempt To Scramble As The First Half Comes To An End

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 7/2/2012 2:59:13 PM

The Atlanta Braves are within striking distance of the Washington Nationals in the National League East. The same can't yet be said for the Philadelphia Phillies, who need to make a push.

Atlanta Braves @ Philadelphia Phillies – Series Overview

Game 1: Friday, July 6

If you are interested in betting on baseball this season, the upcoming three-game weekend series between Atlanta and Philadelphia should offer an emotional collision between two ballclubs who have learned to hate each other after battling so often for supremacy in the National League East. Tim Hudson is Atlanta's starter in the first game of this weekend set. He has a 3.87 earned-run average and has been a generally solid veteran presence on an Atlanta staff that has gotten younger in recent years.

The Braves' pitching staff used to be old a decade ago, when Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz were all hanging around, but this is a new era for the Braves, and it's Hudson who is the elder on the staff, having come to Georgia after several immensely productive years as an ace for the Oakland Athletics. Philadelphia will go with Cole Hamels, who has registered a 3.08 ERA this season. Hamels' ability to change speeds and locate the ball will pose problems for the Braves. Take the Phillies in game one.

MLB Betting Pick: Philadelphia

Game 2: Saturday, July 7

The when you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this second game of the three-game series, you have to pay attention to not just numbers, but the larger roles of the two starting pitchers in this game. Tommy Hanson is part of the future of the Braves' staff. With a respectable 3.59 earned-run average, Hanson is steadily learning how to carry himself on a major-league mound. Philadelphia will send Joe Blanton to the bump with a 4.85 ERA. Blanton is not a particularly strong pitcher, but one simply has to realize that he's a placeholder at the back end of the Phillies' rotation.

A fifth starter should be expected to own imposing stuff. Don't hold this against Blanton; the Braves are simply a bit deeper in terms of starting pitching, even though the Phillies – with Hamels, Cliff Lee, and Roy Halladay – have the superior front-end starters. Take the Braves here.

MLB Betting Pick: Atlanta

Game 3: Sunday, July 8

In the finale of this series, the Braves will send right-handed starter Jair Jurrjens to the bump. Jurrjens has posted a 6.07 earned-run average to this point in the season. However, he was injured for roughly one month and has been quite solid since he returned to the Braves' rotation a week ago. Moreover, Jurrjens' absence means that his arm is fresh and that he's ready to pitch in searing summer heat. His earned-run average should not be taken at face value. He gives Atlanta a very good chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Vance Worley has been terrific as a part of the Phillies' staff. Worley has registered a 2.92 ERA and pleased manager Charlie Manuel to no end.
