How To Bet On Brewers Reds - Brewers Try To Make Upward Push In N.L. Central

The Milwaukee Brewers, without Prince Fielder and other members of last year's division championship team, are struggling in 2012. They get a crack at division-leading Cincinnati.

Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds – Monday, June 25

Why Milwaukee Will Win

In the process of betting on baseball at an online sportsbook this season, you should certainly pay attention to the entirety of a matchup by all means, but you can't ignore the centrality and primacy of starting pitching, especially when the matchup shows that it could outweigh and override other factors.  The Brewers are sending Shaun Marcum to the mound with a 3.39 earned-run average, a perfectly respectable number from a National League starter and an indication of an appreciably high degree of professionalism.

Marcum is nearing the midpoint of his season along with other big-league hurlers, and it's clear that as the month of June winds down, he hasn't hit a wall or encountered any pronounced difficulties. He's a competent professional pitcher who knows how to carry himself through the steady and relentless procession of games and weeks and plane flights and plot twists. The same can't quite be said for Cincinnati's starter in this game, Mike Leake. Whereas Marcum has a very tidy ERA, Leake is saddled with a 5.05 earned-run average as he prepares to take the bump in this ballgame. Leake is nowhere near Marcum in terms of overall acumen and prowess. Milwaukee has enough of an advantage on the mound to pull out a road win in the state of Ohio.

Why Cincinnati Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, your case for Cincinnati is bolstered when you shift the focus from starting pitching to hitting and relief pitching.  Cincinnati slugger Joey Votto is continuing to abuse the baseball this season, lending heft and power to the Reds' lineup. Cincinnati's hitters were very aggressive and successful when manager Dusty Baker piloted his crew to the National League Central Division championship in 2010.

The Reds seem to have "that look" again this season, and they've been helped by the fact that the defending world champion St. Louis Cardinals have been beset by injuries for much of the year. Cincinnati's hitters, if they can wait out Marcum and get pitches in their preferred hitting zones, can turn this game into a high-scoring affair and steer this contest to the bullpens. If this game does become a contest involving relief pitchers, Cincinnati's 100-plus-mile-per-hour fireballer Aroldis Chapman will be hard for Milwaukee to solve in the latter innings. The Brewers will be in trouble if they're not leading this game after seven innings. The Reds are playing with a great deal of confidence right now; the fact that a number of players on the Cincinnati roster were part of the 2010 N.L. Central championship season should help this team going forward.

Who Will Win

It’s not as though this game will be a cakewalk, but Milwaukee really does have a clear edge on the mound. Cincinnati could upset the competitive balance in this game if it can get to Marcum, who does not have overwhelming stuff, but it's hard to trust Leake in this situation. Go with Milwaukee on the road; the Brewers, given the chance to go against the first-place team in their division, will have more urgency in this contest.
