How To Bet On Phillies Cardinals – Phillies Look For Life Against Powerful Cardinals

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 5/23/2012 4:25:35 PM

It has been a tough two months for the Philadelphia Phillies to open the 2012 MLB regular season. Projected to compete for a division title as World Series contenders once again, the Phillies are stuck in the National League East basement, and haven’t shown many signs of life after dropping four-straight. It won’t get any easier for Philadelphia with a four-game set against the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals beginning on Thursday, and stretching through the online betting weekend.

The Phillies’ struggles certainly can’t be blamed on a starting staff that ranks first in the majors in quality starts, but considering that Philadelphia’s pitching has a combined 3.61 ERA that ranks just 15th, it’s hard to mask the team’s offensive struggles. The Phillies rank just 18th in the majors in runs scored, and their anemic offense isn’t going to have much fun against Cardinals’ starter Jake Westbrook in the series opener. Westbrook is just 4-3 on the season, but his 2.41 ERA is among the best in the NL, and he should get enough help from his offense against Phillies’ starter Joe Blanton in what on paper looks like the best matchup for St. Louis in this series.

Philadelphia should have a better matchup in the second game of the four-game set with Cliff Lee on the mound opposite Kyle Lohse, but despite having the better ERA of the two at just 2.66, Lee actually enters this game 0-2 on the season. A complete lack of run support has hurt a pitcher that should have at least five wins by now, but surprisingly enough it is Lohse with the 5-1 record to go with a 2.91 ERA. St. Louis’ offense third in the majors in runs scored so far, and the records of these two pitchers shows how big of a difference that can make it a starter’s numbers.

Unfortunately due to injury the Phillies have to turn to Howie Kendrick for starts, and he will get the call for Saturday’s game against the Cardinals. However, despite a 5.23 ERA on the season, Kendrick has looked very good in two starts for Philadelphia, allowing just three earned runs over 13 innings while going 1-1.  If Kendrick can pitch another solid performance on Saturday, the Phillies can ensure they won’t be swept in the sportsbook series.

It won’t be the featured game on national television, but with Roy Halladay pitching against Adam Wainwright it probably should be. Wainwright has struggled this season with a 4.78 ERA after missing last year because of surgery on his arm, and while he should improve as the year goes on, don’t expect him to close out this series with a win. Halladay is coming off of one of his worst starts of the season against the Washington Nationals, and the last time he struggled that badly he rebounded with a solid sports bet outing his next time on the mound.
