How To Bet On Reds Mets – Cincinnati Comes Out On Top In New York

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 6/12/2012 5:13:59 PM

Many online betting players will be wagering on interleague play this weekend, but there will be one series with two teams from the same league as Cincinnati heads to Queens to take on the New York Mets. There will be a slew of young starting pitchers on the mound for both teams, but the Reds should get the slight edge on the road.

What: MLB Betting
When: Friday, June 15th – Sunday, June 17th
Where: Citi Place, New York, NY
Pick: Cincinnati Reds

Bronson Arroyo (2-4, 3.79) vs. Dillon Gee (4-4, 4.42) –Friday, 7:10 PM ET

Arroyo hasn’t pitched badly during a six-start stretch where he has gone 0-3, but he has been giving up the long ball and that hurts his chances: two more in his last outing, a 3-2 loss at home to Detroit in which he took a no-decision raise Arroyo’s home-run total to 11 and that has to come down. The 35-year-old has solid numbers against the Mets, going 7-3 in 13 starts with an ERA of 3.57, and he is 2-0 in three Citi Field starts with a 1.80 ERA.

Gee earned the loss as the Mets fell 4-2 against the “other” New York team at Yankee Stadium, and he said that he had soreness in his arm, so that will have to be tracked before this game. The 26-year-old has never made a start against the Reds, but he has had a tough go of it at home, going 1-3 in seven starts at Citi Field with a 4.91 ERA.

It’s tough to back a pitcher that is complaining about a sore arm, so the Reds are the play here.

MLB Betting Pick: Cincinnati Reds

Homer Bailey (4-4, 4.35) vs. Jon Niese (4-2, 3.69) – Saturday, 7:15 PM ET

Bailey has also had issues with the long ball as he has been taken deep 11 times as well, but he has given up three earned runs or less in five of his last six starts. The 26-year-old righthander has a loss in two starts against the Mets with an ERA of 13.00, and that loss came at Citi Field, so this may not be the best time to back Bailey, whose first name is a little ironic when you consider that he can’t keep hitters in the park.

The Mets counter with Niese, who has been pretty solid over his last two starts: no earned runs in 13.0 innings with 16 strikeouts and two walks. The 25-year-old southpaw is 2-0 in five starts at home with a 3.60 ERA, and he is 1-1 in three starts against Cincinnati with a 5.79 ERA. Niese does have a poor ERA of 7.00 in the night to go against a 1.99 ERA during the day, but that isn’t enough to go against the Mets.

If the Mets can get to Bailey early, they can make this a rout if Niese brings even his “B” game. The early innings will be important, but the edge goes to the Mets at home in the second game of this series.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Mets

Johnny Cueto (6-3, 2.63) vs. Chris Young (0-0, 3.60) – Sunday, 1:10 PM ET

Cueto was lights out to start the year, but he has since cooled off a little, although he is still giving his team a chance to win when he gets the call. Cueto, another 26-year-old, is 0-3 against the Mets in five starts, putting up an ERA of 6.58 ERA, and he lost in his only visit to Citi Field, allowing four earned runs in five innings.

Young has made just one start in 2012, and that was his ninth start in three seasons as he has been wrecked by injuries and he recently was on paternity leave. It is a huge risk to back Young before this start, but now it is next to impossible as he is surely rusty. The 33-year-old has no decisions in two starts against the Reds with an ERA of 3.60, and even though he is 2-0 in four starts at home, that is still only four starts at home…in three seasons.

You will be taking a massive risk if you go with Young, even though Cueto has struggled against the Mets in his career. Young has great stuff, but he has been ravaged by injuries, which is a shame. Take the Reds to wrap up the series with a win in your sports betting book.
