Preseason World Series Favorites Clash In Mini Two-Game Set Beginning Tuesday

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 5/6/2013 7:53:53 PM

When the Washington Nationals host the Detroit Tigers in a two-game interleague series beginning on Tuesday night, it will be a match up of two preseason sports betting favorites to win the World Series. The Tigers came up just short in last year’s World Series but have started 2013 on the right note and are the favorites to win the American League Central. Meanwhile, the Nationals are battling hard in a tough National League East division, and it is clear that while they have the talent to make some noise the potential road to a World Series won’t be an easy one.

Washington baseball is one of the hottest tickets in town right now, even with the Nationals looking up at the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. Consistency will be the key for Washington if it is going to make a push for a division title, and it starts with being better at home. The Nationals have won just nine of 16 home games on the year, and a struggling offense is the biggest reason for it. Washington will turn to Jordan Zimmermann for Monday’s opener and is hoping he can keep the Tigers from putting up big numbers, and he has been among the best of what has been a very good pitching staff so far. Zimmerman is 5-1 with a 1.64 ERA, and has allowed more than two runs only once through six online betting starts. However Detroit will have one of the tougher offenses he will have faced so far this year, and the Tigers also have a very capable starter of their own in Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez is 3-2 despite an excellent 1.82 ERA, and if he can put together another strong outing against a Nationals’ offense that has really struggled so far then he should be able to earn the decision.

Detroit’s high-powered offense is a big reason that its pitching is sometimes overlooked, but after dealing with Sanchez on Tuesday, the Washington bats will have another tough match up as they look to hit off Doug Fister. Fister is 4-0 with a 2.48 ERA, and the Tigers have won the last two games he has allowed just seven earned runs in his last 27 innings of work. The Nationals expected those kind of numbers from Dan Haren when they signed him, and while his 5.01 ERA isn’t pretty it is still down from 7.36 over his last two starts. Haren has allowed just three earned runs over 14 innings of work in back-to-back wins, and those are the type of online sportsbook numbers that Washington needs from him. The Nationals will need their offense to be better to have any chance at competing for a World Series title, and the Tigers are in the better position of the two teams right now, but if Haren could put together another solid start then Washington should be able to steal a win and salvage a home split.
