American League Central Rivals Meet In Chicago As White Sox Host Tribe

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 6/27/2013 7:20:25 PM

The Cleveland Indians are showing a measure of staying power in their division, staying on the heels of the Detroit Tigers. The Chicago White Sox are in a much more dire position.

Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox – Doubleheader Game 1
Friday, June 28
Sports betting line: no line

Why Cleveland Will Win

In a contest of online poker, the importance of a dealer remains intact. In this matchup, though, it’s hard to get a great feel for how the pitching matchup will unfold. Cleveland has not yet decided on its starter for this contest.

Nevertheless, the fact that the Indians haven’t chosen a starter for this game does not necessarily mean that they are in big trouble against the White Sox. Chicago, you see, has had one of the three worst offenses in the American League over the past two months. The White Sox have a chronic inability to score. They hit a lot of home runs last season but have suffered a power outage in 2013. The White Sox were able to produce instant offense for much of 2012, but they do not have a particularly fast team that can take a lot of extra bases in the running game. Chicago is not a team that’s equipped to play “small ball.” It must hit a lot of homers and also doubles into the power alleys in order to generate a lot of runs. Those extra-base knocks just aren’t coming this season, and that’s why Cleveland – despite a measure of uncertainty in its starting rotation – can win the opener of this twin bill on Friday afternoon in the Windy City. This game will be a 4:10 p.m. local time start in Chicago before the nightcap of the doubleheader begins. This means that when the game starts, sun and shadow will dance across the field, thereby making it much harder for hitters to pick up and identify the pitches. This means that no matter which pitcher Cleveland sends to the mound, Chicago’s hitters should struggle in the first three or four innings. That very real possibility is what should make Cleveland feel that it can contain the White Sox’ offense, no matter which pitcher or pitchers it calls upon in this specific game.

Why Chicago Will Win

When the betting websites break down this contest, they’re going to give a good, long look at the pitching matchup once Cleveland manager Terry Francona finally does decide on a starting pitcher. In the absence of that decision, however, Chicago can feel very confident – with legitimacy, not empty bluster – about its prospects in this specific game. White Sox starting pitcher Hector Santiago will go to the bump with a very solid 3.03 ERA, a mark that’s well above average in the cutthroat American League. A mediocre pitcher would rate as an underdog against a not-yet-named Cleveland starter. Santiago, though, is good enough to give the White Sox the nod at this point.

Who Will Win?

The odds will be stacked against the White Sox on most nights, but with Santiago pitching and Cleveland unsure about its starting rotation, it makes sense that the Pale Hose will grab a victory in this specific situation.
