Wildcats’ Big 12 Success Largely Tied To Quarterback Competition

Posted by Blake Frazier on 7/11/2013 6:49:49 PM

Kansas State Wildcats head coach Bill Snyder feels his team can challenge for a Big 12 title this online sports betting season. He will need to decide on a starting quarterback before they get that chance. Snyder will have to decide between sophomore Daniel Sams and junior Jake Waters, a decision that could go either way after both players impressed in spring practice. Whoever gets the starting job will play a pivotal role in the Wildcats’ success, or potential lack thereof.

OFFENSE

Sams is expected to have the edge after backing up Colin Klein a year ago, as he rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a couple of blowout games. Sams has a strong arm, but he will need to show he can ht his targets with a level of consistency to take the starting job. Waters is one year removed from leading Iowa Western Community College to a national championship. and while he isn’t as quick as Sams he does have the better arm. There is still a chance that these two can split time, and with the entire offensive line back intact and a quality receiving core both players will be put in a position to succeed. There is no concern about the Kansas State rushing attack, with senior running back John Hubert back to lead the way on the ground.

DEFENSE

There are concerns about a Wildcats’ defense that is relatively inexperienced, even with third-team All-American safety Ty Zimmerman back in the fold. Zimmerman was an absolute force in the secondary a year ago, and will need to take on a bigger leadership role as Kansas State doesn’t return a single starter in its front seven. Senior linebacker Tre Walker has starting experience and is coming back from injury, while both Ryan Mueller and Travis Britz will be expected to play a much bigger role up front on the defensive line after getting some experience last online sportsbook season.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Wildcats also lost both their kicker Anthony Cantale and their punter Ryan Doerr on special teams, so there will be turnover on those units as well. However, senior wide receiver Tramaine Thompson is an explosie threat in the kick and punt return games, and should provide a boost in the battle for field position with the chance to go all the way on every touch he gets.

2013 OUTLOOK

Kansas State has plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, but finding a quality starter to replace Klein and getting an inexperienced defense to play at a high level are two things that have to go their way to have any chance competing in the Big 12. The sports betting conference is very deep once again, and either Sams, or Waters, or both will need to step up and make up for the loss of Klein on the offense for the Wildcats to have any chance to contend. That is a lot to ask of these two passers, and the more likely scenario has Kansas State finishing in the second tier of teams behind Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas.

2013 PROJECTION: 8-4; 4th in Big 12
