Mets Nationals Betting Predictions – Mets Look To Teach Nationals About Pressure

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 7/12/2012 4:11:39 PM

While a few online betting sharps probably made a little bit off Washington in the second half, the Nationals now have to prove they belong at the top of the National League East, where other teams have collapsed under the pressure of a division lead. Just ask the New York Mets, who will be in the nation’s capital.

What: MLB Betting
When: Tuesday, July 17th – Thursday, July 19th
Where: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C

Undecided vs. Ross Detwiler (4-3, 3.43) – Tuesday, 7:05 PM ET

This spot is up in the air for the Mets as Dillon Gee is likely gone for the season with a blood clot in his shoulder and they haven’t made up their mind who will go for them yet, which they probably will over the weekend, so keep an eye on the news. The Nationals have Detwiler slotted in and he has been a nice addition to a powerhouse pitching staff that has fuelled Washington’s ascent to the top of the East. Better yet, Detwiler has had the Mets’ number this season with two wins, one as a starter and one in relief and he is 3-1 in seven career games against the Mets with an ERA of 3.60, which are the same numbers that he has at home this season, strangely.

The Mets don’t even know who is going to start, but unless it’s Johan Santana, who will pitch against Atlanta in the first series of the second half, the Nationals should have been your pick anyway.

MLB Betting Pick: Washington Nationals

Chris Young (2-2, 3.41) vs.  Jordan Zimmermann (5-6, 2.61) – Wednesday, 7:00 PM ET

After a late start to his season due to injuries and other reasons, Young should be all stretched and ready to go to help the Mets make a push for the postseason. He has solid numbers against the Nationals with a 3-1 record in seven starts and a 2.74 ERA, and in Washington, Young is 1-0 in three starts with a 2.70 ERA. He’ll need all of that experience to go up against Zimmermann, who has been excellent despite his record, but he is 2-2 in eight starts against the Mets with an ERA of 3.56 for his career and at home, he is 1-3 in eight starts with a 2.83 ERA. Zimmermann gets more help from teammates on the road than at home, and he’ll need a hand on Wednesday night in a nationally-televised affair.

That last sentence is important as this is when the pressure will kick in for the Nationals, who are usually only on national television when Stephen Strasburg is on the mound. How will they begin to handle the pressure of having everyone chasing you? Take New York.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Mets

R.A. Dickey (12-1, 2.40) vs. Gio Gonzalez (12-3, 2.92) – Thursday, 12:35 PM ET

This could end up being the best duel of the week, although those types of matchups usually don’t live up to the hype. Dickey was the Cy Young winner of the first half, but that doesn’t mean anything at this point in the season and he has to continue this improbable run that has been powered by a knuckleball that cost him the start in the All-Star game. Dickey has fared pretty well against the Nationals with a 3-4 record in 12 games (10 starts) with a 3.50 ERA, but he has been great in Washington with a 3-1 record in seven starts and a 2.40 ERA. The Nationals counter with Gonzalez, who didn’t pitch that well going into the break but still managed a four-game winning streak and sometimes, you need a little help from your teammates…just ask Zimmermann. Gonzalez is making his second career start against the Mets, and the first was a no-decision in New York last year when he was with Oakland, and he pitched seven innings of one-run ball.

Everyone keeps waiting for the bottom to fall out for both Dickey and the Nationals as a team, but the wily veteran has showed a lot of resilience this season and even though Gonzalez won’t get shelled, Dickey will get the upper hand in this showdown. This is definitely a game where the under could come into play when it comes to the total, but when it comes to the outcome, New York should be your sports betting pick on Thursday afternoon.
