Minnesota Twins Betting Tips – Twins Try To Avoid AL Central Basement In 2013

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 2/7/2013 6:04:24 PM

When the Minnesota Twins’ 2012 season culminated with a five-game losing streak that including a sweep at Toronto, it was a fitting ending for another disastrous year for the sports betting franchise. With a 66-96 record, the Twins finished at the bottom of the American League Central division, two games behind the Cleveland Indians and 22 back of the first-place Detroit Tigers. Minnesota wasn’t in position this offseason to swing for the fences and acquire the type of talent that would make it an immediate contender. However, the Twins were able to add some key talent that should make them a better team for 2013 and beyond.

Perhaps the most important move of the offseason was acquiring Vance Worley and Trevor May from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Ben Revere. While Revere is just 24-years old and hit .294 last season, he failed to hit a home run and finished the year with just 32 RBI, which made it a lot easier for Minnesota baseball fans to see him leave. Although the 25-year old Worley is going off an online sportsbook season in which he struggled with a 4.20 ERA and finished just 6-9, he has all of the tools to challenge for one of the top spots in the Twins’ rotation, and it’s important to remember that he went 11-3 with a 3.01 mark the previous season. Meanwhile, the 23-year old May could be ready to contribute from the outset as an arm that could fill out the starting rotation, and any work from him would be considered a boost. Minnesota ranked near the bottom of the MLB in ERA, quality starts, and BAA last season and while this doesn’t fix all of that, so the additions of Worley and Mays as well as free-agent signings Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey, and Rich Harden should mean an upgrade at the position.

As for the offense, former MVP Joe Mauer had a great year as he led the majors in OBP and nearly won the batting title with a .319 average while hitting 10 home runs and 85 RBI. Denard Span and Ryan Doumit also showed promise with solid hitting numbers, while Josh Willingham provided some power with 35 home runs. Justin Morneau also continued to show improvement after dealing with concussion issues and finished with 19 home runs and 77 RBI, and if he and Mauer can stay healthy the offense can take another step forward even without Revere. Trevor Plouffe hit 24 home runs in 119 at-bats, and should get more at-bats as he becomes a mainstay in the lineup.

The online betting odds are that the Twins show improvement as a team in 2013, although how much they can improve their win total is up for debate. Minnesota has enough weapons that it might be able to avoid finishing in the AL Central basement once again, but a lot of things have to go right for that to happen in a division where all five teams made improvements in the offseason.

Prediction: 72-90; 4th In AL Centreal
