Aces Take The Mound And Headline Tuesday's MLB Action

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 5/20/2014 2:18:41 AM

Numerous staff ace's will be taking the mound on Tuesday meaning there will be plenty of good pitcher duals to keep an eye on. Pitching match-ups are often an indication of which team has the initial upper hand, but some of the match-ups on Tuesday could go either way making them all the more intriguing to watch and follow.'

Cincinnati Reds @ Washington Nationals
Tuesday May 20, 2014 – 7:05 PM ET

This pitchers on the mound for this game are Johnny Cueto and Doug Fister, each of which is talented enough to be a front of the rotation starter. Cueto is 4-2 with a 1.25 ERA for the Cincinnati Reds this season and will be facing the Washington Nationals for the first time this year. Fister on the other hand has struggled this year for the Nationals as his 4.76 ERA through two starts is nothing to be proud of, but last year with the Detroit Tigers he was 14-9 with a 3.67 ERA, showing he's definitely talented enough to get the win and beat Cueto. Neither team has boasted a very good offense so far this year, but the Nationals have numerous power hitters in the lineup and as a result are my pick to get the win at home.

Pick: Nationals

Milwaukee Brewers @ Atlanta Braves
Tuesday May 20, 2014 – 7:10 PM ET

Although not talked about that often, both Yovani Gallardo and Julio Teheran have the stuff to be front of the rotation starters and staff aces as well. Gallardo is the more experienced hurler and he's also rebounding nicely from a lackluster 2013 season. So far Gallardo has a 3.07 ERA through nine starts, compared to Teheran who has a 2.20 mark through the same amount of games. Teheran broke into the majors last year with a 3.20 ERA through 30 starts, and is looking even better this year on an improved Atlanta Braves squad. Atlanta is 23-19 this year and currently holds first place in the NL East, yet their offense has been holding them back this year as they've scored the least amount of runs in the majors this season. The Milwaukee Brewers however are just below the league average when it comes to runs scored, and with Gallardo on the mound they should be the better team.

Pick: Brewers

Seattle Mariners @ Texas Rangers
Tuesday May 20, 2014 – 8:05 PM ET

Hisashi Iwakuma has continued his quiet dominance of the American League this season as he's 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA through his first three starts. He missed time earlier in the year due to a finger injury, but clearly it hasn't been affecting his pitching as he's now thrown 16 straight scoreless innings. His opponent on the hill will be Texas Rangers starter Colby Lewis, who's struggled this season and has a 4.99 ERA through six outings. Lewis appeared to be an up and coming pitcher for the Rangers when they acquired him in 2010, but he's slowly been going down hill and will likely have trouble with Robinson Cano and other hot hitting Seattle Mariners batters. The Mariners haven't been setting the league on fire, but with two everyday starters hitting above .300 and numerous players with five or more home runs they shouldn't have too much trouble beating the Rangers, who are currently a game and a half behind them in the AL West standings.

Pick: Mariners
