Pujols Injury Could Have Major Impact On Angels In Both Short And Long Term

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/23/2013 7:19:34 PM

The 2013 MLB season is less than a month in but already there have been rumors about injuries that could have a substantial impact to the season outcome for several teams. That is particularly true in the case of a Los Angeles Angels team that is dealing with a potentially devastating blow to their lineup and overall franchise makeup, as superstar Albert Pujols has been dealing with plantar fascitis in his left foot. Pujols is off to a solid start to the online sports betting season, but the Angels have won just seven of their first 18 games and losing their biggest name would be a huge hit.

Pujols is batting .279 this season with a pair of home runs, 11 RBI, and eight runs, and the Angels have appreciated that he has been much better earlier on this year than he was in his debut season with the club. However, Pujols has been limited to the DH spot over the past week because of the injury, and with the knowledge we have of how the plantar fascitis has effected other athletes across different sports the news isn’t could. Pujols told reporters that the injury was, “killing” him, and that he cannot tolerate the discomfort. Using Pujols as the DH at least limits the number of times that he has to deal with the injury in a game, but if it gets worse there is a good chance he could miss some time and that would be awful news for an online sportsbook club that has already struggled out of the gate this season.

In other injury news, a pair of top teams from the National League East will be without two of their better bats as Washington Nationals’ third basemen Ryan Zimmerman and Atlanta Braves’ second basemen Dan Uggla are each being held out of their respective lineups. Zimmerman has been experiencing cramping in his hamstring and with the Nationals off to a solid start, there really is no reason to force him to play. Zimmerman underwent an MRI to look at the structure of the injury and confirm it was only a strain, but that did land him on the DL. Meanwhile, Uggla is considered day-to-day for the Braves with a left calf injury, but should be back in the lineup by this weekend. Atlanta is another sports betting team that is off to a hot start and has no reason to force injured veterans to play when they are feeling discomfort in any shape or form.

While the Braves could be without Uggla until then, they have welcomed back Freddie Freeman to the lineup. Freeman was benched as the team opted to have him sit out and rest a strained oblique, and the move appears to have paid off as he is now back at full strength. Freeman initially was upset about the decision for him not to play, but the extra rest will do him well in the long run, and it isn’t as though Atlanta missed not having him in the lineup with wins in 13 of its first 18 games.
