MLB Power Rankings - Phillies back in championship form

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/24/2012 9:49:02 AM
If you use MLB power rankings to help determine your betting choices, be prepared for some major changes in the near future. The trade deadline is days away and more big names than usual could be on the move. The big trade winners could make a serious jump in the ranks. How does the landscape look for deadline week?

(Last week’s rankings in brackets)

1. (1) Philadelphia Phillies (58-40): Take a first-place team and add Pedro Martinez - and possibly Roy Halladay - to the mix? Gulp. The Phillies look like the team to beat right now.

2. (3) New York Yankees (61-39): They may be the most playoff-ready team out there, as the pitching is in fine form and could get even stronger if the Yanks decide to acquire another arm (Jarrod Washburn?).

3. (4) Los Angeles Angels (59-40): Definite trend forming here. The Angels are yet another contender that seriously needs to add one more starter to the rotation. The offense is rolling – how about that Kendry Morales?

4. (5) Texas Rangers (56-42): We MLB betting experts look sillier by the day as the Rangers, who we expected to crash and burn, keep churning out wins. If only Josh Hamilton would get going.

5. (2) Los Angeles Dodgers (62-38): Chad Billingsley suddenly can’t throw a strike or make an out to save his life, and the Dodgers’ lack of rotation depth is exposed. They need to be busy before the trade deadline.

6. (6) Boston Red Sox (58-41): The John Smoltz experiment is failing miserably, but Terry Francona insists on sticking with him. How long before the boo birds come out?

7. (17) Chicago Cubs (52-46): The Cubbies are the top MLB power rankings mover of the week. Sleeping giants Rich Harden and Alfonso Soriano are finding themselves.

8. (8) Tampa Bay Rays (55-46): Are they really shopping Kazmir, Pena and Crawford? If it ain’t broke...

9. (9) Colorado Rockies (54-46): Proof that you should trust scouts before you bet at your offshore sportsbook; hyped Troy Tulowitzki has been baseball’s best offensive shortstop for about two months now.

10. (11) San Francisco Giants (54-46): A torn rotator cuff may mean the end of the road for Randy Johnson. We’ll miss you, Big Unit.

11. (7) Detroit Tigers (52-47): Does anyone want to win the AL Central? The Tigers are the latest team lying down. Their pitchers have to learn how to win on the road.

12. (13) St. Louis Cardinals (55-48): Feeling the heat from the Cubs now but still may not make any more major deadline deals; Matt Holliday was their big splash.

13. (15) Florida Marlins (52-48): Pesky as ever, but we’ve come to expect this half-hearted surge from them every year around this time.

14. (12) Atlanta Braves (51-49): With their rotation, they could really do some damage if they could find a way into the playoffs.

15. (16) Minnesota Twins (51-50): You have to love the AL Central’s parity. We left them for dead a week ago but they’ve clawed back into the hunt. Don’t expect them to come out on top, though.

16. (10) Chicago White Sox (51-50)

17. (14) Houston Astros (51-49)

18. (20) New York Mets (48-51)

19. (19) Seattle Mariners (52-48)

20. (18) Milwaukee Brewers (49-51)

21. (21) Toronto Blue Jays (49-52)

22. (22) Cincinnati Reds (45-54)

23. (26) Arizona Diamondbacks (43-58)

24. (25) Cleveland Indians (42-59)

25. (27) Oakland Athletics (42-57)

26. (29) Washington Nationals (32-68)

27. (23) Baltimore Orioles (42-57)

28. (28) San Diego Padres (39-62)

29. (30) Kansas City Royals (40-59)

30. (24) Pittsburgh Pirates (43-57)

It’s been an amazingly disappointing season for Kansas City’s sports betting odds. A few bottom dwellers – the D-Backs, Indians, Athletics and (gasp!) Nationals – are playing so-so baseball these days, enough that they’re stealing the odd game against good teams. Keep an eye on their situations in the MLB power rankings.
