MLB Power Rankings - Angels coming on strong

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/24/2012 9:45:48 AM
MLB betting players have been waiting for the Los Angeles Angels to come around, and with one of their sluggers back in the lineup, they’re poised to make a late-season run.

(Last week's rankings in brackets)

1. (3) Los Angeles Angels – well, Vladdy Guerrero is back and just in time for the Angels to get it together for the postseason. He’s also just in time for a huge series against Texas.

2. (2) New York Yankees – the Yankees are 0-8 against Boston this season, and the Red Sox come to town on Thursday. This series could break their spirit, or increase their lead in the AL East.

3. (1) Philadelphia Phillies – Cliff Lee has been awesome since coming to Philly, but the rest of the rotation, not so much.

4. (5) Los Angeles Dodgers – if the Dodgers’ betting chances drop, they may look back and wonder, “how did we miss out on Cliff Lee AND Roy Halladay?”.

5. (6) Boston – it came out that David Ortiz may have tested positive for steroids back in 2003. In other news, the sky is blue.

6. (9) Colorado – they’ve won five in a row and have a six-game homestand coming up. Time for another late-season rally to the playoffs?

7. (4) Texas – the Rangers kicked off a 10-game road trip with two straight losses in Oakland. I wouldn’t put them down for many picks in your offshore sportsbook over the next week.

8. (8) Tampa Bay – the Rays would be leading both the AL and NL Central divisions with their current record, and their pitching isn’t half of what it was last year.

9. (7) Chicago Cubs – the Cubs are finally starting to hit, namely Alfonso Soriano. Their early injuries may have made them fresher for the second half of the year.

10. (10) San Francisco – the deadline came and went, and no slugger for the Giants. Even with their pitching, they’ll have their hands full in the NL West.

11. (12) St. Louis – Albert Pujols’ numbers for a “slump” month in July: .289, 4 HR, 15 RBI. If he’s not leading the sports betting baseball lines for the NL MVP award, the award needs to be abolished. Give him the AL award as well, while you’re at it.

12. (13) Florida – Remember Josh Beckett and A.J. Burnett? Look for Josh Johnson to be next in the “Marlins offload ace pitcher” sweepstakes.

13. (11) Detroit – The Tigers are 15 games above .500 at home, and leading the AL Central, once game ahead of...

14. (16) Chicago White Sox - ...the South Side team from Chicago, who are seven games above .500 at home and are 1.5 games ahead of...

15. (15) Minnesota - ...the Twins, who are eight games above .500 at home. See a trend here? If you can protect your homefield in the AL Central, you’ll be going to the playoffs.

16. (14) Atlanta

17. (19) Seattle

18. (23) Arizona

19. (20) Milwaukee

20. (25) Oakland

21. (17) Houston

22. (21) Toronto

23. (18) New York Mets

24. (27) Baltimore

25. (25) Washington

26. (24) Cleveland

27. (29) Kansas City

28. (30) Pittsburgh

29. (28) San Diego

30. (22) Cincinnati

That white flag you see is coming from Cleveland, who traded away Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez. The Nationals are somehow making their way towards the top 20, while the Reds have plummeted. Finally, if there is a bigger disappointment than the injury-ravaged Mets, I’ll stop making betting picks.
