Struggling Teams Look For Solutions On “Crisis Thursday” In The Big Leagues

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 6/5/2013 7:56:58 PM

On Thursday, the Major League Baseball schedule will still offer some very urgent matchups, as the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners try to build some hope in June.

Game 1: Minnesota Twins @ Kansas City Royals – Thursday, June 6

NFL betting experts who don't devote a lot of attention to big-league baseball might think that in this matchup, all hell is going to break loose and that a lot of runs are going to cross the plate. That opinion is probably going to hold true. Minnesota starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey has a 6.66 ERA, while Kansas City starter Wade Davis lugs a clunky 6.16 ERA to the hill for his next scheduled start. It’s rare to get a matchup in which two starting pitchers have ERAs over six, and the month is not April.

We’re into the month of June, meaning that pitchers have had a chance to work off early-season rust while also gaining the opportunity to work in warm weather conditions that generally allow a pitcher’s arm to become more loose and flexible. Yet, neither Pelfrey nor Davis has been able to make any appreciable progress. This means that a slugfest should be in order. The Twins probably stand to benefit from this dynamic. Kansas City, the loser of 11 straight home games entering Wednesday – the longest such streak in the history of the Royals as a franchise – has not been able to hit for power during this awful stretch of baseball.

The Royals will be bringing a knife to a gunfight here, enabling Minnesota to outscore Kansas City over the course of nine innings. Take the Twins in this situation.

MLB Betting Pick: Minnesota

Game 2: San Diego Padres @ Colorado Rockies – Thursday, June 6

The betting websites that are scrutinizing lineups and pitching staffs do not need to be told that the San Diego Padres have been a light-hitting team for many years. San Diego’s offense is what has held back the franchise, while the rest of the National League West (minus the Los Angeles Dodgers) has gotten better. In this game, the Padres will try to gain ground on one of the three teams that’s in front of them in the N.L. West. Making a move now is the only way the Padres can sustain some degree of belief that they can remain in the chase during the dog days of summer, which are right around the bend.

In this contest, San Diego has the slightly better starting pitcher. Andrew Cashner has a 3.65 ERA, and he’ll be going up against Colorado starter Jhoulys Chacin, who sports a 4.26 ERA. Do keep in mind, though, that an ERA at Coors Field should be taken with an allowance for variations. A pitcher who starts at Coors (which comes with being a pitcher for the Rockies) would probably have a much lower ERA had he pitched in another ballpark on a regular basis. One should still credit what Cashner has done this season, but it’s reasonable to say that the gap between him and Chacin is not as large as one might first think. Colorado has better hitters than San Diego, and that’s what’s probably going to win this game for the Rockies in the end. Go with Colorado in this contest, because there’s more to a given baseball game than the starting pitchers.

MLB Betting Pick: Colorado

Game 3: New York Yankees @ Seattle Mariners – Thursday, June 6

For a lover of online poker, it might be hard to arrive at a decision on who is the better dealer in this game. Phil Hughes of New York and Aaron Harang of Seattle have both endured their share of struggles this season. However, Hughes’ inconsistencies are less severe than Harang’s. New York should be able to outscore Seattle in what looks and feels like a shootout.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Yankeees
