Online MLB Betting – Who Will Lead Philadelphia’s Super-Rotation In 2011 Wins?

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 3/7/2011 4:05:01 PM

Sports betting players have been counting down the days to Philadelphia’s Opening Day meeting with Houston on April 1st at Citizens Bank Park, where the Phillies will begin a new era with the most celebrated starting rotation in recent memory. The Phillies were already stocked with Cy Young winner Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels, but when Cliff Lee decided to return to the City of Brotherly Love, they became the World Series favorites. So, which of these pitchers lead the rotation in wins, or will there be a surprise?

Roy Halladay : -125

Halladay is one of the leading MLB betting favorites for the Cy Young as the reigning winner, his second after claiming one in Toronto in 2003. He has averaged almost 17 wins over the last nine seasons, and last season’s 2.44 ERA was the lowest of his career. “Doc” will be 34 on May 14th, but you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who takes better care of himself, or prepares better, than Halladay so age shouldn’t be an issue. Manager Charlie Manuel would like to get Halladay’s innings down a bit as last year’s 250.2 innings was the second-highest of his career (he has thrown 27 complete games over the last three seasons), but if he keeps pitching the way he does, Halladay may not give Manuel a chance.

Cliff Lee : +110

The Phillies snagged the biggest free agent on the market in Lee, who spent the second half of the 2009 season in Philadelphia to lead them to the World Series, where they lost to the New York Yankees. Lee was 3-1 in 12 regular-season starts, but he really made his name in the playoffs, going 4-0 in five starts with two complete games and a 1.56 ERA. Lee was let go when the Phillies picked up Halladay, splitting time between Seattle and Texas, and again was a beast in the playoffs to help the Rangers to the Fallas Classic, where they were beaten by San Francisco. Because of all the moves, Lee hasn’t been able to settle into a full season since 2008, when he won the Cy Young with Cleveland. Now that he settled, the 32-year-old southpaw should be a force.

Cole Hamels : +420

MLB betting players may forget that Hamels is still only 27 years old, but he has NLCS and World Series MVPs on his mantle after leading the Phillies to the promised land in 2008. Hamels isn’t as overpowering as Halladay, Lee, or even Roy Oswalt, and he isn’t the innings-eater that those three are, but his stuff is as good as anyone in the league, and last year he had his highest total in strikeouts, and lowest in ERA. He’s also a very intelligent guy who has soaked up knowledge from all three, and Hamels could be a darkhorse for the Cy Young award.

Roy Oswalt : +500

Oswalt was great after moving from Houston to Philadelphia, going 7-1 in 13 regular-season starts with a 1.74 ERA, then he added a 1-1 mark in four playoff appearances (three starts) with a 2.75 ERA. If you’re a good MLB betting player, then you appreciate Oswalt and know that he has been one of the most consistent pitchers since the turn of the century, averaging 15 wins a season and like Halladay and Lee, the 33-year-old doesn’t appear to be losing any steam. Oswalt is fiercely competitive and the pitchers on this staff may push him to another 16 or 17-win season.

Field (Any Other Pitcher On The Staff) : +1000

Whoever gets this spot will have no pressure on them as all eyes will be on the Fab Four, so they could have a big season. Joe Blanton and Kyle Kendrick are the top contenders and it appears as though Blanton will get the first shot. Blanton has shown glimpses of the guy who won 16 games in Oakland in 2006, but he hasn’t been consistent and has been the subject of trade rumors all offseason. Kendrick hasn’t been consistent to be the No.5 guy over his five-year career, but with the Phillies possibly looking to get rid of Blanton’s $3 million salary, he could be handed the job and as we said, he’ll be under no pressure.

MLB Betting Outlook

No one outside of the top four is going to lead the Philadelphia in victories, so that clears that up. The Phillies’ offense struggled with injuries last year, so that is going to be a factor in victories: you could argue that Halladay would have had 25 wins if the Phillies would have given him their usual support, rather than his 21 wins. Halladay is the smart pick because, for all accounts, he’s the best pitcher in baseball and could be even better in his second season in the National League. But if you’re looking for some value, Hamels would be the way to go because we think he’s heading into the prime of his career right now, and he could explode this season. Still, we’ll play it safe and go with Roy Halladay in our online betting picks.
