Orioles And Blue Jays Clash In The American League East’s Battle Of The Birds

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 5/22/2013 7:35:08 PM

The Toronto Blue Jays have to start winning consistently if they want to have any hope of inserting themselves into the American League East race this season.

Series Preview: Baltimore Orioles @ Toronto Blue Jays
Game 1 – Thursday, May 23

Even the ranks of online football betting students who simply can’t be bothered to do much of any analysis on Major League Baseball, it would seem that the Blue Jays – though residing at the bottom of the American League East standings, well behind the Orioles – will hold the upper hand in this specific contest. Baltimore, you see, is trotting out young prospect Kevin Gausman, a 2012 draftee who will be making his first big-league start. This is simply an intimidating situation for any young player.
Taking the ball to the mound for the first time as a major-league starter is the kind of experience every aspiring pitcher dreams about, but for that very reason, it’s the kind of experience that often leads to stage fright. Gausman must not only control his emotions; he will have to showcase his talents and make timely adjustments against major-league hitters. Maybe Gausman will become something special; however, that’s a long-term projection. For now, the smart money is that in his big-league debut, Gausman will confront some harsh realities about performing at the highest level of competition. Take Toronto here.

Game 2 – Friday, May 24

Legal online sports betting experts know that if the laws of averages hold true in one situation, they should hold true in other similar situations. One night after Baltimore sends a rookie to the hill, Toronto is going to do something that’s nearly (but not quite) equivalent. The Blue Jays will send starting pitcher Chad Jenkins to the mound. Jenkins has only one appearance to his credit this season, and only 14 in his brief career. He made a total of 13 appearances last season, three of them starts. Jenkins doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt here, much as Kevin Gausman of Baltimore doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt in Thursday’s series opener. Take the Orioles in this spot.

Game 3 – Saturday, May 25

In online poker games and in baseball, the presence of the dealer looms large, but in this game, the two starting pitchers are performing at similar levels. Baltimore starter Freddy Garcia has a 4.84 earned-run average, while Toronto starter R.A. Dickey has a 4.50 ERA. With the two starters existing on the same plane, the bullpens and bats should make the difference here. Baltimore is swinging the sticks with more proficiency than Toronto, so the Orioles merit a small edge on Saturday in game three of this series. Toronto just hasn’t inspired much of any confidence to this point in 2013.

MLB Betting Pick: Baltimore

Game 4 – Sunday, May 26

The starting pitcher for Baltimore, Miguel Gonzalez, enters this game with a 4.25 earned-run average. Toronto starter Ramon Ortiz owns a 4.08 ERA. Gonzalez is a more proven starter, but Ortiz – after a truncated outing in his last start against Tampa Bay (he didn’t get out of the third inning) – will have a fresher arm. That, and an ounce of extra motivation, could enable Ortiz to reach a higher gear. Take Toronto in the finale of the four-game set.
