Orioles Red Sox Betting Tips – Boston Brings Baltimore Back To Earth

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 5/31/2012 3:42:40 PM

Baltimore’s success has been an online betting surprise so far in 2012, but they were swept in Toronto and then they have to travel to Tampa Bay to take on Boston and this will be a true test of what they’re made of. The Red Sox need something to jumpstart their season, and it will come at home at the Orioles’ expense.

What: MLB Betting
When: Tuesday, June 5th-Thursday, June 7th
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
Pick: Boston Red Sox

Jake Arrieta (2-6, 5.37) vs. Jon Lester (3-4, 4.79) – Tuesday, 7:10 PM ET

Arrieta hasn’t won in five starts, allowing four runs or more in four of them, and facing the Red Sox is probably the last thing that he needs right now as Arrieta is 0-3 in four starts against them  with a 5.73 ERA. The 26-year-old has made one start at Fenway Park and he was tagged for five runs (four earned) in just 4.1 innings, so it doesn’t look good for Arrieta.

It especially doesn’t appear to be favorable to have Lester on the mound for the Red Sox and to say that he has dominated Baltimore is an understatement: a 14-0 record in 19 starts with an ERA of 2.47. Lester has been struggling all season, particularly at Fenway where he has an ERA of 7.16 and he has allowed 15 earned runs in his last 16.2 innings of work, but the crafty lefty may simply need a visit from the Orioles to fix what ails him.

MLB Betting Edge: Boston Red Sox

Jason Hammel (6-2, 3.06) vs. Josh Beckett (4-4, 4.15) – Wednesday, 7:10 PM ET

Hammel has been solid until recently as he has given up four earned runs in three of his past four outings and in Toronto, the Blue Jays took him deep four times; however, you could look at it as it could have been worse; at least Hammel held them to four solo shots. A win against the Red Sox earlier this season was his first when facing Baltimore’s East rivals, and the 29-year-old is now 1-2 in 10 games (which includes four starts) with a 5.34 ERA. Hammel has made just two starts at Fenway, but seven games overall, and he is 1-1 with a save and an ERA of 5.40.

After a couple of shaky starts early in the season, Beckett is coming around and had given up a grand total of three earned runs in 21.2 innings heading into a start against Detroit on Thursday night at home, where he was 2-2 in five starts with a 3.73 ERA. The 32-year-old is 7-5 in 18 starts against the Orioles with an ERA of 4.25, but given how he has been pitching as of late, it’s tough to wager against Beckett, especially if he can get the win or at least put up a good showing against the Tigers on Thursday night.

MLB Betting Edge: Boston Red Sox

Wei-Yin Chen (4-1, 3.31) vs. Clay Buchholz (4-2, 7.19) – Thursday, 7:10 PM ET

This matchup is tentative, so make sure you confirm in your sportsbook before you wager, but these two appear to be next in their team’s rotation and they both pitch on Friday, Chen in Tampa Bay as he tries to pick the Orioles up after being swept in Toronto, while Buchholz will also be on the road against the Blue Jays.

Chen, a 26-year-old from Taiwan, made his fifth career start against the Red Sox at Fenway Park and did more than hold his own, getting the win by allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over five innings of work, and outside of a six-run outing in Washington, Chen has given up three earned runs or less in each of his starts so far in 2012.

Meanwhile, Buchholz has been all over the place, although he appears to be settling down a little after allowing five runs or more in his five starts; he has done so just once in his last four outings. The 27-year-old is 5-3 in 12 games (11 starts) against the Orioles with a 4.16 ERA, and even though he has an ERA of 6.38 at home, Buchholz still has a 3-1 record in six starts at Fenway.

However, that isn’t encouraging, especially when you consider Chen’s last start in Boston, so the Orioles get the nod here in this sports betting matchup.
