Pittsburgh Pirates Betting - Pittsburgh Looks To Keep Momentum Going

Posted by Dale “Skip” Lalonde on 4/4/2012 4:20:21 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates are definitely not a doormat anymore, but now that they've lifted themselves from the cellar, they have many more daunting challenges to deal with.

Pittsburgh Pirates

If you are interested in betting on baseball this season, you don't have to automatically peg the Pittsburgh Pirates as a fifth- or last-place team in the National League Central Division. The Pirates are no longer a laughingstock in the world of Major League Baseball. They didn't lose 100 games, and they almost checked in with fewer than 90 losses, going 72-90 in 2011. Pittsburgh was six games above .500 in late July, remaining in the thick of the National League Central race and the N.L. wild card chase as well.

The Pirates drew decent crowds to PNC Park in the month of August, a distinct rarity for the organization. Their youthful squad battled each and every game, frustrating the more talented contenders in the National League and transforming the Bucs from pansy to passionate nuisance. However, the Pirates certainly ran out of steam in August and September. They went 19-43 in their last 62 games, proving that youth has its limitations and that the rigors of the 162-game season take their toll mentally as much as physically, if not more so.
Few players on the Pirates were used to the long grind of the season, and as a result, this team is now in position to endure a little better if it is thrust into the same basic spot. If it loses 43 of its last 62 games in 2012, one can safely say that the organization is regressing. That's not likely to happen, though.

This is a team that won't grab the eye of very many sports betting experts. Its accomplishment is that it won't finish below the Houston Astros, and probably not the Chicago Cubs, either. It won't roll to 95 wins but won't collapse and win only 65. If it can win 80 games, it will have done well in 2012, and the encouraging thing in the Steel City is that 80 wins is a very realistic goal.

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this team, you'll find that its starting rotation can be legitimately competitive with the rest of the National League. Kevin Correia could be a third starter for a number of Major League Baseball clubs, and he's a fourth starter for Pittsburgh. James McDonald and Jeff Karstens are two live young arms who will lend ballast to the Bucs' starting rotation as well.

The team went out and got Erik Bedard in the offseason, adding a quality arm to the mix. Bedard's big problem has not been the level of his pitching, but the level of his endurance. He's been an injury-prone pitcher in his time with the Baltimore Orioles and the Seattle Mariners. His appetite for action, especially on hot summer days, has not always been substantial, and that's a concern for a team that made an investment by picking him up. However, if Bedard is able to last throughout the whole season, Pittsburgh can play up to its potential and be a .500 team.
