Predictions For 2012 ALCS Betting – Tigers Don't Want The ALCS To Go Back To New York

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 10/15/2012 6:56:16 PM

The Detroit Tigers have gained a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees. They need their ace to deliver the goods on Tuesday night.

New York Yankees @ Detroit Tigers – American League Championship Series

Game 3: Tuesday, October 16

Betting experts are fully aware of the trouble the New York Yankees face at the present moment. They know that the Game 3 pitching matchup hugely favors the Detroit Tigers. Phil Hughes posted a regular-season ERA of just over 4.20. That figure doesn't begin to compare to the mark registered by Detroit ace Justin Verlander, the Game 3 starter for the Tigers. Not only did Verlander produce an ERA of under 2.80 for the regular season; he then shut out the Oakland Athletics in the decisive fifth game of the American League Division Series, pitching a complete game when his team needed him to do just that.
Detroit's bullpen is extremely weak, and if the Yankees can get this game into the ninth inning with a tied score and Verlander out of the game, they will have the advantage. However, it will be hard for them to score against Verlander, who gave up a solo home run to his first batter in the postseason and has subsequently pitched 16 scoreless innings while walking only five hitters and striking out 22 of them. Verlander is simply pitching at another level right now, and while New York ace C.C. Sabathia could probably keep pace with him in a pitchers' duel, Hughes is not in the best position to do so.

You don't have to be an mma betting expert to realize that even though Detroit is not hitting the ball very well in its own right, the Tigers should be able to score two or three runs against Hughes and the Yankees' bullpen. If Detroit does indeed score three runs, that's probably going to be enough to win the game, given the quality of Verlander and the ineptitude of New York batters. The injury to shortstop Derek Jeter, one of the Yankees' few dependable hitters, is going to leave New York shorthanded for this contest. Detroit is the pick here.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit

Game 4: Wednesday, October 17

If you've been reserving most of your attention for NFL betting, you need to take a crash course on the baseball dynamics of this series between the Yankees and the Tigers. One part of the calculus is that while New York has been awful at the plate, the Tigers haven't been much better. Detroit needed a defensive misplay and then a blown umpire call to score its three runs against the Yankees on Sunday in Game 2 of this series. C.C. Sabathia, New York's starter for this game, should be able to shut down Detroit. Tiger starter Max Scherzer has been really good for his team, but Scherzer is battling injuries to his shoulder and ankle. New York should win this game.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Yankees

Game 5: Thursday, October 18

In Game 5, it's a rematch of the Game 1 duel between Andy Pettitte and Doug Fister. Both men pitched well in that game, but Pettitte actually had better stuff. Look for Fister to improve and for Pettitte to decline, as the Tigers wrap up this series in five games on Thursday.

MLB Betting Pick: Detroit
