Red Sox Try To Remain In First Place This Weekend As They Host The Angels

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 6/6/2013 7:01:09 PM

It’s Friday, which means that new series are beginning in Major League Baseball after the travel day on Thursday. We’ll see which teams can maintain or establish a winning identity.

Game 1: Los Angeles Angels @ Boston Red Sox – Friday, June 7

Sport betting lines will probably tilt toward Boston in this contest. Los Angeles starting pitcher Tommy Hanson took multiple weeks off in the month of May because he was distraught and needed time to sort out his emotions after a death in his family. Hanson faces the challenge of trying to regain rhythm and a comfortable regular way of proceeding.

He’s going to face a big ask this Friday, as he steps inside hitter-friendly Fenway Park to face one of the top two teams in the American League, the Boston Red Sox. Boston and the Texas Rangers have been the two best teams in the Junior Circuit through nine weeks, so the Angels – who recently got swept four straight games at home by the lowly Houston Astros – do not figure to put up a huge fight in New England.

It would be very surprising if the Angels can win this series, and that being the case, it’s unlikely that the Halos will be able to win this first game of the weekend set on Friday. Trust Boston more than Los Angeles in this contest.

MLB Betting Pick: Boston

Game 2: Houston Astros @ Kansas City Royals – Friday, June 7

When the best online betting sites tackle this clash, they will view it as a game the Royals should be favored to win. Yes, that seems like a very weird statement when you realize that the Royals just recently snapped an 11-game home losing streak, the longest in the history of the franchise. However, the pitching matchup clearly leans in Kansas City’s favor. Jordan Lyles is the starting pitcher for Houston, and he lugs a very ordinary 4.30 ERA to the bump for this game.

James Shields, on the other hand, has a 2.83 ERA, and as the Royals’ starter in this contest, he has been much better than ordinary to this point in the season. Shields should be able to shut down the Astros in this tilt, giving Houston a very small window of opportunity and virtually no margin for error. Lyles has to pitch above his normal pay grade just to give the Astros a reasonable chance of winning. Kansas City, for all of its woes over the past month, makes more sense as a betting choice in this spot.

MLB Betting Pick: Kansas City

Game 3: Philadelphia Phillies @ Milwaukee Brewers – Friday, June 7

This is not the same thing as poker, given that there’s an odd-shaped ball involved, but Philadelphia does have the better dealer in this game by a wide margin. Cliff Lee, in this uneven season for Philadelphia, has remained a source of strength and dependability for the Phillies. Milwaukee’s starting rotation has been shaken up by injuries and has had to use relievers to fill in gaps. Alfredo Figaro is one such reliever, and he has the unenviable task of facing Lee here on Friday. This is a complete mismatch. Take the Phils in this one.

MLB Betting Pick: Philadelphia
