As The Month Of June Begins, Intriguing Matchups Line The Calendar

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 6/3/2013 7:24:10 PM

In the first full week of June, teams might not face crisis points (some will, but many others won’t), but they do have to make sure to limit damage and show some staying power.

Game 1: Cleveland Indians @ New York Yankees – Tuesday, June 4

Sport betting lines will probably be split on this game. The Indians and Yankees both endured difficult weeks last week. Their pitching staffs got battered on numerous occasions and they lose the momentum they had generated earlier in the month of May. The pitching matchup here is one in which neither starter is particularly convincing – Scott Kazmir of Cleveland because of his performance this season, David Phelps of the Yankees because of his lack of experience and his injury earlier in the season. It’s hard to make a lot of sense out of a pitching matchup that is so shrouded in uncertainty. The sense here, though, is that Kazmir – being a veteran – can steady himself a little better than Phelps will manage to do. Give the nudge to the Tribe on the road in New York.

MLB Betting Pick: Cleveland

Game 2: Tampa Bay Rays @ Detroit Tigers – Tuesday, June 4

When the best online betting sites tackle this clash, they will view it as a toss-up. Matt Moore has been a terrific starting pitcher for the Rays this season. He’s carried the starting rotation with David Price dealing with injury issues. Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez has pitched some of the best games of the season in Major League Baseball. He struck out 17 Atlanta Braves several weeks ago, and he flirted with a no-hitter in late May before seeing his quest for glory end in the top of the ninth inning on a single by Minnesota’s Joe Mauer. Moore and Sanchez should duel in a five-star battle. It’s hard to say which team will rise to the occasion. Detroit lost two 1-0 games last week, and both of those losses were in 11 innings. The Tigers might be doubting themselves a little bit at the moment, so go with Tampa Bay in this contest on Tuesday in the Motor City.

MLB Betting Pick: Tampa Bay

Game 3: Texas Rangers @ Boston Red Sox – Tuesday, June 4

We’re not talking about poker, at least not the online variety, but it has to be said that the centrality of the dealer is impossible to ignore in baseball. In each of these three games being analyzed, a pair of American League title contenders are facing each other. Cleveland, the Yankees, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Boston, and Texas are all teams that are either in first place at the moment or are no more than three games out of first place. They are all at least four games above the .500 mark and have established a standard of quality to this point in the season. Teams don’t play well if they don’t have upper-tier pitching, and such is the case for both the Rangers and Red Sox as they prepare for this series in Fenway Park. Justin Grimm is the starter for Texas in this tilt, while Ryan Dempster goes to the bump for Boston. Dempster is a much more experienced pitcher than Grimm. As the season moves toward the dog days of summer, trust Dempster’s ability to solve problems on the mound. Go with the Red Sox here.

MLB Betting Pick: Boston
