Orioles, Reds And Cardinals Own Advantages In Wednesday Matchups

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 6/11/2013 7:28:50 PM

The Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets will all be swimming against the current on Wednesday. They’ll try to upend superior opponents on the diamond.

Game 1: Los Angeles Angels @ Baltimore Orioles – Wednesday, June 12

Even among the ranks of online football betting students who simply can’t be bothered to do much of any analysis on Major League Baseball, it would seem that the Orioles have the clear advantage in this game.

Baltimore will send starter Jason Hammel to the mound for this contest. It’s true that Hammel is saddled with a 5.18 ERA, and that might lead you to think that the O’s are in trouble here, but when you then realize that the Angels and manager Mike Scioscia have not yet settled on a starting pitcher of their own for this game, it’s clear that Los Angeles’ rotation is in a state of flux.

The Angels have been horrible this season, while Baltimore has generally backed up its 2012 season with a solid start to 2013. One should certainly side with the Orioles from a betting standpoint.

MLB Betting Pick: Baltimore

Game 2: Cincinnati Reds @ Chicago Cubs – Wednesday, June 12

Legal online sports betting experts know that if the laws of averages hold true in one situation, they should hold true in other similar situations. The Cincinnati Reds have steadily outpaced the Chicago Cubs this season. The Reds have scored more runs than every National League team other than St. Louis and Colorado.

They have consistently attacked opposing pitchers and have the blend of starting pitching, relief pitching, and timely hitting that produces a playoff-caliber ballclub. Chicago, on the other hand, has found it difficult to establish any sort of foothold in the National League Central this season. The Cubs’ offense has perked up in recent weeks, but entering June 10, the Cubs still had a negative run differential.

That differential was only minus-3, though, suggesting that the Cubs should have a record close to the .500 mark. Yet, Chicago toted a 25-35 record into June 10, a very disappointing record for a team that has been scoring roughly as many runs as it has allowed. The Cubs are where they are because their bullpen has been so deficient. The Cubs have been a disaster in the eighth and ninth innings, so if this game is close, one should lean strongly to the Reds.

The starting pitchers in this game are fairly even in terms of quality. Mike Leake of the Reds has a 2.93 ERA, while Travis Wood of the Cubs has a 2.65 ERA. Expect Leake and Wood to cancel each other out, leaving this game to be decided by the bullpens in the latter innings. Advantage, Cincinnati.

MLB Betting Pick: Cincinnati

Game 3: St. Louis Cardinals @ New York Mets – Wednesday, June 12

In online poker games and in baseball, the presence of the dealer looms large, and in this game, the two starting pitchers have both been performing well in recent weeks. New York starter Dillon Gee has gone at least seven innings in each of his last two starts, allowing only one run in each of them.

He has lowered an ERA above six runs to just 5.20. The difference between Gee and his opponent, though, is that Gee has been good only in the past two weeks. St. Louis starter Shelby Miller has been brilliant throughout this season. Miller, though a rookie, has posted a 1.91 ERA in 10 starts this season. He has exhibited great control and is not giving opponents a lot of walks. He is staying away from the big inning and is keeping hitters off balance. He should be able to outpitch Gee and lead the Cardinals to victory.

MLB Betting Pick: St. Louis
