Rays vs Angels Odds - Poor rotation depth will ground Angels

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/24/2012 9:40:51 AM
MLB bettingThe Rays vs Angels odds could feature the best baseball we see all week, as Tampa Bay and Los Angeles both seem to be peaking right now. The Rangers are pushing the Angels in the AL West, but L.A. keeps winning. Meanwhile, the Rays are gaining serious ground on the Red Sox in the AL East. Let’s break down the sports betting lines.

Rays vs Angels odds: Failure to acquire a pitcher will come back to bite L.A. this week

  • Rookie Sean O’Sullivan hasn’t figured out how to pitch at home
  • Price and Santana should both post hideous lines on Tuesday
  • Jeff Niemann is excellent but not indestructible

Tonight, 10:05 p.m. ET
Matt Garza (7-8, 3.63) vs Sean O’Sullivan (3-1, 4.24)

Blossoming Matt Garza takes his giant killer act on the road when the Rays vs Angels odds kick off in Los Angeles tonight. While he’s struggled with control here and there, he always brings his best stuff against top teams, meaning it’s unlikely that the Angels chase him early. Garza does have his work cut out for him, however, as the Angels lead the majors in batting average and rank second in runs scored.

Rookie Sean O’Sullivan takes the hill for the Angels and doesn’t inspire confidence. He throws strikes but allows lots of homers and he’s winless at home with a 5.91 ERA and .357 opponents average. Expect lots of runs tonight from two potent offenses in the Rays vs Angels odds, but pick Tampa because of the pitching advantage.

MLB betting pick: Rays

Tuesday, August 11, 10:05 p.m. ET
David Price (5-4, 4.91) vs Ervin Santana (4-6, 7.20)

Wednesday’s Rays vs Angels odds are a total crapshoot at the offshore sportsbook, as both David Price and Ervin Santana are extremely erratic. David Price is a monster at home (5-1, 2.72) but disgusting on the road, going 0-3 with an 8.20 ERA and 17 walks in 26.1 innings over six starts. As bad as Price is on the road, Santana may be even worse at home, going 0-4 with a 12.38 ERA and eight homers allowed in six outings.

Price blows up on the road without fail; Santana does the same at home. I’ll go with Tampa since Price has been the better pitcher overall and since B.J. Upton (.467), Carl Crawford (.381) and Carlos Pena (.333) have Santana’s number over their careers.

MLB betting pick: Rays

Wednesday, August 12, 3:35 p.m. ET
Jeff Niemann (10-5, 3.73) vs Trevor Bell (NR)

Jeff Niemann has emerged as perhaps the leading American League Rookie of the Year candidate, consistently finding ways to grind out wins .Even though his road ERA is a pedestrian 4.26, he’s 6-3 away from Tropicana Field. I do, however, think the Angels will get to him Thursday. They rocked him in Tampa Bay earlier this season for five runs over 3.2 innings. Los Angeles sends rookie Trevor Bell to the hill for his first major-league appearance, but sometimes rookie debuts give the advantage to the pitcher, who has the element of surprise. Go with the home team in your Thursday betting.

MLB betting pick: Angels
