Terry Francona faces Red Sox with His New Team the Cleveland Indians

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/15/2013 7:23:29 PM

Terry Francona is back in the dugout managing games with the Cleveland Indians this year after taking last season off. Prior to last year however, Francona spent the majority of his career as the manager for the Boston Red Sox whom he led to two World Series titles in eight years of coaching. The Indians are now hoping Francona can do the same for them despite their weak pitching staff. His success so far this year has been limited with the Indians as they currently sit in third place in the AL Central with a 5-6 record.

The Red Sox on the other hand are enjoying a little more success than the Indians as they are in first in the tough AL East with a 7-5 record. The reason for the early season success of the Red Sox is the improved performance of the starting rotation, which had a tough season last year as the team finished last in the AL East. The Red Sox, and a few of those placing bets on online sports books, are hoping for another dominant starting pitching performance from Tuesday’s starter Felix Doubront. Doubront was one inning shy of having a quality start vs. the Toronto Blue Jays in his first appearance of the season, but is starting just his second full season in the majors and looks to improve upon his 4.86 ERA from his rookie season.

MLB Betting Preview: Cleveland Indians

The Indians will be sending former All-Star Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound to face the Red Sox, and unless he returns to his 2010 self, it could be an ugly outing for him. After Jimenez started the year extremely hot in 2010 and then cooled off to finish with a respectable 2.88 ERA, his performance has dropped off more and more each year, evident by his 5.40 ERA from last season. The Indians’ lineup isn’t as tough as the Red Sox’s, but it’s still something for opposing pitchers to be concerned about with new acquisition Michael Bourn and catcher Carlos Santana both starting the year out hot and showing they should be key contributors in the Indians’ lineup this season.

Because the Red Sox will be sending Felix Doubront to the mound, sports bettors should be expecting this to be a high scoring game, meaning it’s an excellent candidate for the over/under runs total bet that is typically set around eight runs. I fully expect these teams to combine for double digit runs as the Red Sox have plenty of offensive weapons in their lineup as well, including Dustin Pedroia and second year man Will Middlebrooks who has four home runs on the year.

MLB Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The Red Sox appear to be the better team on paper, and as these two teams meet for the first time this season we will see which appears to be better on the field. One important thing to take into account before gambling on this game is the inconsistent nature of Ubaldo Jimenez, Jimenez has shown he can be dominant in the past, but recently has seen plenty of struggles on the mound and there has been no indication anything will change for him soon.
