Red Sox vs Yankees Odds - Why Yankees will end Red Sox jinx

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 4/24/2012 9:43:43 AM
bet on baseballThe Red Sox and Yankees are still the top MLB betting favorites in this year’s World Series odds, but Boston has the advantage, winning all eight meetings with their rivals in 2009 so far. The Yankees host the Red Sox in a four-game set with a 2.5-game lead over Boston in the American League East, and they’ll finally come away victorious.

Red Sox vs Yankees Odds – Yankees extend AL East lead

  • Chamberlain keeps hot streak up
  • Beckett, Burnett meet for third time this year
  • Young Buchholz will struggle in the lions’ den of Yankee Stadium
  • Pettitte, Lester set for southpaw duel

Thursday, August 6, 7:05 PM ET
John Smoltz (2-4, 7.12) vs Joba Chamberlain (7-2, 3.58)

Smoltz is still working himself into shape, but he’s been awful on the road with a 7.40 ERA in four outings. He’s only faced the Yankees twice in his 21-year career, taking a couple of no-decisions away with a 4.50 ERA. Chamberlain has won three straight starts, allowing only two runs in 21.2 innings. He’s 0-1 in two starts against the Red Sox in 2008, but Chamberlain has a 2-1 record in eight career outings (four starts) with a 3.49 ERA when facing the Yankees’ hated rivals. The 23-year-old righthander has had his troubles at Yankee Stadium, but the Yankees are still -180 betting favorites on Thursday. Go with the home team.

MLB betting pick: Yankees

Friday, August 7, 7:05 PM ET
Josh Beckett (13-4, 3.27) vs A.J. Burnett (10-5, 3.89)

This will be the third meeting of the season between these two, and Beckett has owned his former Florida teammate, going 2-0 to bump his career numbers against the Yankees to 9-4 in 15 starts despite a 5.42 ERA. Burnett, who leads the American League in walks, has a ridiculous 12.91 ERA in his two starts against Boston this year, but this was the first time he’d ever lost to the Red Sox, with a record of 5-1 in 10 starts and a 3.80 ERA. With these two, there’s the possibility of a pitcher’s duel...or an explosion. Friday’s game should go over the posted total in your sports betting lines, so check it out. The third time isn’t a charm for Burnett.

MLB betting pick: Red Sox

Saturday, 4:10 PM ET
Clay Buchholz (1-1, 6.05) vs C.C. Sabathia (11-7, 3.95)

This will be Buchholz’s fourth road start in five outings since coming up from the minors, which isn’t the way you want ease your young hurler into the rotation. The 24-year-old righthander gave up seven runs in four innings at Baltimore, and it could get worse against the Yankees, as Buchholz has a 7.45 ERA with a pair of no-decisions against them. Sabathia has allowed five runs in each of his last two starts, and a loss to the Red Sox earlier this year dropped his record against them to 2-5 in eight starts with a 4.07 ERA. Buchholz’s inexperience will hurt the Red Sox in the eyes of offshore sportsbook players.

MLB betting pick: Yankees

Sunday, 8:00 PM ET
Jon Lester (9-7, 3.79) vs Andy Pettitte (9-6, 4.35)

Both are coming off solid starts, and they’re also good against their rivals. Lester has won one of his two starts against the Yankees in 2008, and making him a perfect 3-0 in six starts with a 3.43 ERA. Pettitte lost to the Red Sox this season, but he’s still a very respectable 16-9 in 33 outings (31 starts) with a 3.76 ERA against them. Pettitte has allowed a single run in three of his last four starts, going into the seventh inning each time, while Lester is coming off a 10-strikeout performance against Tampa Bay. While everyone is looking at Beckett-Burnett 3 on Friday, this should be the duel of the series. Give the slight betting edge to the veteran Pettitte at home.

MLB betting pick: Yankees
